IWCF Surface Well Control Certification (Supervisors) Level 3&4

This course has been designed to fulfill the requirements for the International Well Control Forum (IWCF) Surface Well Control Qualification.  

This course is directed at people in well control critical positions.  Candidates are required to complete the IWFC accredited training course prior to the sitting assessment.  The course content will be taught according to the IWCF syllabus and will prepare candidates for the IWCF examinations and assessment. The course will have a minimum of 32 hours classroom instruction.

This course will consist of practical assessments using simulator equipment, a principles and procedures (P&P) written examination, and a surface well control equipment written examination.  The IWCF certifications will be valid for two years.

    Day 1

    IWCF Registration, Barrier, and Pressure Concepts

    • Well barriers and standards
    • Responsibilities for well control and integrity
    • Well control definitions and concepts
    • U-tube analogy for well pressure calculations

    The first day begin with IWCF registration and verification of pre-requisite certifications as required by IWCF.  The classroom sessions on this day will take participants through topics such as well barriers, barrier standards, and testing before using the u-tube analogy to make well pressure calculations.

    Day 2

    Influxes, Kicks, and Shallow Gas

    • Kick tolerance
    • Kick causes, prevention, and detection
    • Shallow gas and well control preparation
    • Well shut-in procedures and first actions

    The second day participants will learn about oil, gas, and water kicks, as well as challenges presented by shallow gas.  Participants will then be instructed on the use of the simulator by a demonstration of the system. Well control load cases will be reviewed.

    Day 3

    Gas Behavior and Well Control Procedures

    • Gas behavior in Water Based Mud (WBM)
    • Convention and unconventional well control procedures
    • Well control complications
    • Gas behaviors in Oil Based Muds (OBM)
    • Vertical and deviated well control

    Participants learn about gas behavior in drilling fluids, then they will move into a detailed workshop on well control procedures on this day.  Participants will learn about complications which may arise during well control operations and will review appropriate response actions.  Each participant will practice a full scale well control simulation using the simulator.

    Day 4

    Well Control Equipment

    • Review and selection of equipment
    • Equipment installation and testing
    • Practical – full scenario simulations with “unexpected events”

    The final classroom session will cover in detail the well control equipment used at a rig-site.  After the classroom session, participants will again move to the simulator to practice a full scenario well control simulation complete with “unexpected events”.

    Day 5

    IWFC Practical Assessment

    • IWCF practical assessment with simulator
    • IWCF written exams

    The final day of this course will consist of multiple IWCF assessments.  These will include written assessments over principles and procedures, surface well control equipment, and a practical exam on a well control simultor. Examinations will be delivered by an IWCF approved invigilator or exam supervisor.

    Principles and procedures for kick detection and repsonse. Practical actions which are taken following the detection of a kick to return a well to primary well control. 

  • Audience

    This course is intended for rig-site personnel in critical well control positions, office based engineers or supervisors who require IWCF certifications and persons who desire a thorough understanding of well control concepts. Level 3 is intended for persons who are equipment operators or persons who have to perform an action to prevent or respond to a well control incident. Level 4 is intended for supervisors who have oversight that can correct actions which are carried out.

  • Prerequisites

    Participants in the course should be familiar with well control concepts, understand primary (hydrostatic) well control elements and be able to perform basic math calculations.
