From Field to Simulator - An Applied Basin and Petroleum Systems Modeling Workshop

The Lodeve Basin (southern France) is an outstanding example of a half graben basin, with well exposed source, reservoir and seal rocks, and oil seeps proving the presence of an active petroleum system. This blended field to classroom workshop aims to observe and discuss the petroleum systems elements and processes based on the visit of high quality outcrops, prior to the integration of those field observations into the Schlumberger software PetroMod. Hands-on exercises and group discussions build the core of the classroom sessions.

    Day 1

    Introduction to Basin and Petroleum Systems Modeling (classroom)

    o General introduction

    o Introduction to Basin and Petroleum Systems Modeling

    o Basic theory

    o Case study Lokichar Basin

    o Introduction to Lodeve Basin

    The workshop starts with an introduction to Basin and Petroleum Systems Modeling (BPSM), including some light theory and a case study demonstrating the application of BPSM in the Lokichar Basin, onshore Kenya, a continental rift basin which will be compared to the Lodeve Basin throughout the workshop.

    After a short transfer to the field area in the afternoon, the participants will receive an on-site introduction to the Lodeve Basin.

    Day 2

    Structural and stratigraphic architecture of the Lodeve Basin (field)

    o Overview of Lodeve Basin

    o Base Permian unconformity

    o Lower Permian black shales: source rock stratigraphic logging exercise

    o Mid Permian unconformity

    o Red Permian and Permo-Triassic unconformity

    On the first day in the field, the different formations of the basin stratigraphy will be visited and discussed with respect to their potential in terms of source, reservoir and seal rocks (petroleum systems elements).

    Day 3

    Dynamic aspects of the Lodeve Basin (field)

    o Overview of syn-rift geometry in Red Permian

    o Syn-rift faulting and role in hydrocarbon migration and trapping

    o Fracture dynamics

    o Regional overview

    The second field day focuses on dynamic aspects of basin formation, in particular syn-rift faulting and fracturing, and petroleum systems processes such as hydrocarbon migration and trapping are discussed.

    Day 4

    Transition from field to simulator and scenarios (classroom)

    o Recapitulation of field observations

    o Upscaling exercise of logged source rock stratigraphy

    o 1D petroleum systems modeling

    o Calibration to field measurements

    o 1D scenarios

    Participants will learn about pitfalls related to upscaling of measured source rock properties into the software. Measurements made in the field will be used to calibrate 1D models in hands-on exercises, which allow to test geological scenarios about erosional amount, heat flow etc.

    Day 5

    Scenarios (continued) and analogues (classroom)

    o 2D petroleum systems modeling workflow

    o 2D scenarios (source rock properties, migration pathways, etc.)

    o Continental rift basin analogues

    o Discussion and conclusion

    Using 2D models, further geological scenarios are discussed and evaluated for their impact on the exploration prospectivity in the Lodeve Basin and surrounding basins. The modeling results are confronted with known regional oil occurrence as well as analogue continental rift basins in the world.

  • Audience

    The workshop is designed for geoscientists or other oil and gas professionals with petroleum geology background, as an introduction or reminder of basin and petroleum systems modelling.

  • Prerequisites

    Basic understanding of petroleum geology and basin geology is necessary. Prior experience in PetroMod software might be helpful for the exercises but is not required. The workshop focuses on the understanding of the concept and principles rather than detailed worksteps in the software.
