Basic Reservoir Monitoring

This course teaches you the basics of field surveillance and reservoir monitoring with the aid of reservoir monitoring tools such as PNL, C/O, and other tools.  You will learn how these may be applied to diagnose reservoir-wide behaviors such as water breakthrough, gas cap migration, and behind pipe commingling.  You will learn to evaluate water and gas saturations and determine resistivity behind the casing using hands-on, in-class workshop

    Day 1

    • Reservoir drive mechanisms and associated production problems
    • Reservoir Fluids: fluid properties: GOR, Bubble point Pressure; three phase diagram
    • Tool conveyance using tractors and coiled tubing

    Day 2

    • Depth control in cased hole wells using GR and CCL
    • Well completions applied to vertical, deviated, horizontal, and multi-laterals
    • Pressure control system for rigless operation

    Day 3

    • Justifying acquiring reservoir monitoring logs
    • The physics of pulsed neutron logging (PNL)
    • Capture mode in PNL logging

    Day 4

    • Carbon/Oxygen (C/O) mode
    • Cased Hole Formation Resistivity
    • Slim hole induction logging in plastic (non-conductive) casings.

    Day 5

    • Workshop using capture mode for evaluating water and gas saturation
    • Workshop on interpreting resistivity logs behind the casing..

    Geoscientist or engineers who are responsible for field wide surveillance or reservoir monitoring programs. 

  • Prerequisites

    As this course deals with physics of reservoir monitoring, an engineering or geosciences degree is recommended.
