Assuring Flow From Pore to Process: Basics, Modeling, and Lab

Impediment to flow caused by either fluid phase behavior coupled with the dynamics of flow and/or production-chemistry-related issues.  These issues in the wellbores and flow lines have long been identified in onshore and offshore shallow-water environments.  These events became more severe in deepwater environment as the intervention is challenging from both technical and cost considerations.  Naturally, these situations demand careful consideration of the fluid phase behavior, flow dynamics, and production chemistry aspects at the design phase of field development.

This five-day course will present a holistic approach to flow assurance.  The course will introduce technologies, work-flows, and their deployment for the identification, characterization, and management of flow impediments.  Flow impediments that will be discussed include slugging and precipitation of organic and inorganic solids.  The course will present best practices and fit-for-purpose design solutions for minimizing the risk of flow stoppage while transporting hydrocarbons from “Pore to Sales Meter”.  The principles will be demonstrated using field examples from around the world.  In this five day version participants will be exposed to methodologies and technologies used for flow assurance modeling.  Also, a visit to the lab will be devoted to provide insight about some measurement aspects of production chemistry and its importance.

    Day 1

    Introduction and PVT Characterization 

    • Identification methodologies
    • PVT characteristics
    • Capturing fluid samples      

    On day one, the course will cover the definition and identification methodologies of key flow impediments like fluid PVT characteristics, fluid flow-heat transfer, asphaltenes, waxes, hydrates, scales, naphthanates, emulsions, corrosions, erosions, and sands in various challenging environment.  The participants will then be exposed to technologies in capturing representative fluid samples.

    Day 2

    Laboratory Solids Characterization 

    • Measurement methodologies
    • Reservoir fluid compositions
    • Potential production impediments    

    On this day, the course will cover current measurement methodologies of reservoir fluid compositions and PVT and potential production impediments like solid asphaltenes, paraffin waxes, hydrates, and inorganic scales.

    Day 3

    Integration Concepts and Field Example of Management Approaches 

    • Fluid flow and heat transfer
    • Systematic and holistic flow assurance
    • Case studies     

    On day three, participants will be exposed to fluid flow and heat transfer concepts and their relationship in precipitation of organic and inorganic solids. Consequently, the course will demonstrate the value of a systematic and holistic flow assurance integrated program for production systems and operations, using case studies from various field locations around the globe.

    Day 4

    Flow Assurance Modeling 

    • Flow assurance with transient models
    • Flow assurance with integrated asset models

    On day four, participants will be exposed to methodologies and technologies used for flow assurance modeling.  This will include a discussion on flow assurance with transient models and with integrated asset models.

    Day 5

    Visit to Technology Center Laboratory 

    • Introduction to phase behavior
    • Solid detection system (SDS)
    • High temperature capillary viscometer

    The objective of the visit to Technology Center will be to provide an insight about some measurement aspects of production chemistry and its importance.  Some topics that will be covered include sample restoration and homogenization of dead oil and live oil samples, gas chromatographic analysis of hydrocarbon gas and liquid, and organic solid deposition measurements using RealView.  Participants will also learn about rheological measurements using rheometer for waxy crude, high temperature capillary viscometer, and asphaltene content and SARA (saturates, aromatics, resins, and asphaltene) measurements.

    This course is intended for engineers and chemists in the upstream and downstream segments of the petroleum industry, as well as technology managers with an appreciation of the risks, challenges, and solutions for the free flowing hydrocarbon product.

  • Prerequisites

    Four year Engineering or Geoscience degree plus five years of work experience.
