    Power Generation System

Participants of this course will gain insight to oil and gas plant utilities and the various systems that store or produce inputs required for safe and efficient operation. The focus of this course will be one of these components, the power generation and distribution system.  Some plants generate all or some of their electricity through cogeneration.  As petrochemicals become more difficult to recover, the demand for investment in power generation continues to increase.   The location of such assets can be at an oil or gas field, a refinery, or even at a compression or pumping plant.

The oil and gas industry has a tremendous need for prime movers that can provide electrical power. The oil and gas business is a multi-billion dollar industry with a huge need for prime movers to deliver electrical power – whether in the form of combustion (reciprocating) engines or combustion turbines (rotating machines) or mechanical drives.

This course provides the basic knowledge for the safe operation, maintenance/repair and management of equipment associated with power generation and distribution systems. The course emphasizes the extreme importance of theses systems on the safe and efficient operation of the entire plant.

    Day 1

    Electric Power Distribution

    • System operation and safety
    • Interrelationships between process, equipment, instruments, and controls
    • Concepts of cogeneration

On day one, participants will gain an understanding of electric power distribution and cogeneration in order to comprehend the operation and maintenance of the equipment associated with these systems.  Systems loads internal grid layout will also be discussed with emphases on back-up systems and electrical system safety. Common controls as well as lubrication and lubrication systems for these systems will also be examined

    Day 2

    Gas Turbines

    • Principals of operation, troubleshooting and maintenance for the major components, and auxiliary systems of gas turbines
    • Principles of operation, troubleshooting and maintenance for the major components, and auxiliary systems of compressors
    • Gas turbine and compressor systems start-up, shutdown and normal operation procedures

On day two, participants will gain an understanding of gas turbines in order to comprehend the safe operation and maintenance of the equipment associated power generation.  System components such as rotors, blades, shafts, combustion chambers, nozzles, etc. will be studied.  Auxiliary systems such as lube oil, seal oil, fuel, start-up, will also be examined.  Operation abnormities such as surging and choking phenomenon will be investigated.

    Day 3

    Steam Turbines and Diesel Systems

    • Principals of operation, troubleshooting and maintenance for the major components and auxiliary systems for steam turbines, and diesel generating systems
    • Diesel storage distribution and bunkering
    • Emergency power generation

On day three, participants will gain an understanding of steam turbines and emergency diesel power generation in order to comprehend the operation and maintenance of the equipment associated with these systems.  System components, applications, variations and control methodologies will be examined. Inspection and maintenance procedures as well as safe work practices will also be reviewed.

This course is mainly targeted to process operators, process technologists.  The course can also be applicable to employees working with equipment and materials purchasing, equipment procurement, job planning as well as immediate supervisors to the working technicians.

Participants should have some recent exposure to oil and gas facility terminology.
