    Subsea Control Systems

With the demand for oil and gas, exploration and production has moved to the harsh environment of the world’s oceans.  Equipment used below the water’s surface must be rugged and reliable in order to meet the process demands and protect the environment.  This equipment including the subsea wellhead control system requires specially designed equipment and components in order to withstand this environment.

This course will provide participants with the knowledge to recognize the components of the subsea wellhead control system and have a basic understanding of the system maintenance and control requirements.  Participants that may not directly be involved with subsea wellhead control systems will become familiar with the parts of the system and some of the challenges involved in their installation, repair and maintenance.

While focusing on the technical aspects of measurement and control of subsea wellhead control systems, this course provides a balance of theory, demonstrations, and case studies to support the operational, maintenance, and safety concepts related to this important system.

    Day 1

    Subsea Wellhead System

    • Subsea wellhead equipment
    • Subsea wellhead safety and operating procedures
    • Flanging of the wellhead

On day one, participants will gain an understanding of the types, purpose, construction and operation of subsea wellhead equipment as found in todays oil and gas industry.  The requirements and challenges of the subsea control system will be discussed.  Routine and emergency operation including associated features will be examined while stressing process, safety and environmental compliance and concerns.

    Day 2

    Subsea Wellhead Control Equipment

    • Valves and valve actuators
    • Sensors and transmitters
    • Cabling

Participants are exposed to operating the subsea wellhead at ocean depths and the rugged measuring instruments and valves required on the second day.  The need for specialized instrumentation and cabling will be discussed as well as the types, purpose, construction and operation of subsea wellhead control equipment. Safe work practices as found in today’s oil and gas industry will be stressed.

    Day 3

    Subsea Wellhead Control

    • Subsea wellhead control
    • Flow and hydraulic controls
    • Safety shutdown systems

On the last day of this course, discussions focus on how to properly operate the subsea wellhead control system.  The participants will gain an appreciation of how the proper flow controls must be in place to maintain wellhead pressure and the proper oil levels in the phase separators. They will also gain an understanding of the control of subsea wellhead equipment as found in today’s oil and gas industry.  Routine and emergency operation including associated features will be examined while stressing process, safety and environmental compliance and concerns.

This course is mainly targeted to process technicians, process technologists, instrumentation personnel, and safety and maintenance personnel.

Anyone taking this course should have some exposure to an oil and gas facility terminology.
