    Oilfield Corrosion Management

This course will cover the fundamentals, mechanisms, and the main causes of corrosion in the oil and gas production system.  It will also cover the corrosion control and monitoring methods used in the oil and gas production systems.  This course will contain practical examples of these in the oil and gas industry.

By the end of the course, participants will have learned how to identify the corrosion mechanism, estimate and predict the corrosion rate, select material for different corrosion environments, evaluate and select corrosion inhibitors for different corrosion environments, and estimate the erosion rate.  Participants will also learn how to select the corrosion monitoring techniques and elaborate on a corrosion management plan for pipeline.

    Day 1

    Corrosion Principles and Classification

    • Corrosion impact
    • Thermodynamic and kinetic factors
    • Corrosion classification

Day one of this course will focus on corrosion principles and classification.  Participants will learn about the corrosion impact in oil and gas production systems, along with the main issues of corrosion.  Corrosion principles will be covered including thermodynamic and kinetic factors in aqueous corrosion systems.  The day will end with participants learning about corrosion classifications, such as general or uniform corrosion, localized corrosion, mechanical assisted degradation, and environmentally induced cracking.

    Day 2

CO2 and H2S Corrosion and Corrosion Inhibition

    • CO2 and H2S corrosion
    • Inhibitor fundamentals, guideline, and selection
    • Methods of application

Day two will start off with participants learning about CO2 and H2S corrosion, this will include the corrosion mechanism, factors affecting the corrosion rates, condition for the corrosion, and prediction. Corrosion inhabitation fundamentals, guidelines, and selection will also be covered.  The day will end with a discussion on methods of inhibitor application, quality control, and monitoring.

    Day 3

    Material Selection

    • Material selection guidelines
    • Typical materials used for downhole equipment, tubing and pipeline
    • CRA, GRE, and carbon steel comparison

On day three, participants will learn about material properties, oil and gas fluid resistance, and selection.  They will learn typical materials used for downhole, low alloy steel, Corrosion Resistant Alloy (CRA), and guidelines for downhole tubular material selection.  CRA, GRE, and carbon steel comparison will also be covered, with special attention to the costs, advantages, and limitations of each.

    Day 4

    Erosion

    • Calculating erosion rate
    • Erosion by non-corrosive fluids
    • Corrosion-Erosion

Day four will cover erosion.  Participants will learn how to calculate the erosion rate, what the velocity limit for avoiding erosion is, erosion by non-corrosive fluids, and corrosion, corrosion - erosion management, erosion - corrosion in absence of solids, erosion - corrosion in a solid containing corrosive medium, erosion flow chart .

    Day 5

    Pipeline External Corrosion

    • Types of corrosion and control methods
    • External protection
    • Exercises and case studies

The last day will cover pipeline external corrosion, types of external corrosion present in pipelines, control methods,  NACE RP 0502-2002 “Pipeline External Corrosion”, along with risk based inspection and pipeline integrity management.
