The Pipeline Transportation of Produced Hydrocarbons

This intermediate level course concerns the pipeline transportation of hydrocarbons and is intended to provide knowledge to the participants on a number of topics that concern flow assurance and cost reduction.   The course provides a high level overview of  many interrelated topics at a practical level.  These include

    • Factors influencing the energy requirement for transporting oil through pipelines
    • Things that are in our control and relevant to process optimization
    • Oil transportation and gathering systems
    • Elementary nodal analysis
    • Heavy and extra heavy oil properties
    • Practical chemical and mechanical options for transporting oils
    • Relevant rheological principles supporting pipeline pressure loss and energy consumption calculations
    • Scaling issues
    • Physics of sand settling and engineering implications
    • Appropriate fluid mechanics and the physics of pipeline hydraulics
    • Pressure loss calculation methodologies
    • Surfactant and diluent based methodologies
    • Thermal methods
    • Methods suitable for multiphase flow calculations
    • Relevant literature

The course is centered on the principles of chemical engineering and is designed for pipeline design engineers, operations engineers and production engineers.

    Day 1

    Fundamentals

    • Oil Field Processes and Requirements
    • Temperature and Pressure Effects on Oil Viscosities
    • Software demonstration

On the first day, participants will learn about the properties of the production fluids a and the requirement to design and operation of the oilfield

    Day 2

    Fluid Mechanical Considerations

    • Fluid Mechanical Methods for Predicting Pressure Losses and Energy Requirements (pseudo single phase flow in pipelines)
    • Isothermal Flow in Pipelines

Day two will discuss the mechanical consideration for the pressures loses and energy requirement in a pipeline. The day end with the use of software to estimate the hydraulic in a pipeline

    Day 3

    Chemical and Thermal Considerations

    • Properties of Compressible gases
    • Diluents and Diluted Crude Oils
    • Transportation Using Heat
    • Scaling

In the third day Participants will analyze the chemical and thermal considerations for the transport of production fluid though a pipeline. The Day ends with analysis of the flow assurance in pipeline

    Day 4

    Multiphase Systems

    • Surfactant Based Systems
    • Sand in Oil
    • Multiphase Flow (Part I)

In this day, Use of surfactant the transport of fluid will be cover as well and how to handle sand in the transport system.  The Last part of the day contains the studies of the different flow pattern of the multiphase flow

    Day 5

    Multiphase Systems and Client Problems

    • Multiphase Flow (Part II)
    • Client Problem Session
    • Course Review

Last day of the course continue with the hydraulic analysis of the multiphase flow. At the end of the day case studies will be analyzed and discuss among the participants
