MSc Distance Learning Program

From Heriot-Watt University and NExT

Since 1975, Heriot-Watt University's Institute of Petroleum Engineering has offered the highly successful, full-time Masters program in Petroleum Engineering.  To provide greater flexibility, Heriot-Watt also offers a distance learning option for students seeking to pursue a Petroleum Engineering MSc on a self study basis.

NExT, in partnership with Heriot-Watt University, is pleased to offer students the option of completing the distance learning program in Abu Dhabi.  This option offers students the ability to complete their education in nearer to their own country. Upon successful completion of the program, graduates earn the same industry recognized Master of Science degree in Petroleum Engineering from the Heriot-Watt University as full time students.

How does it work?

Each term, NExT conducts 5 day workshops in Abu Dhabi that cover the requisite module topics. Students are expected to attend these sessions, submit assignments as required, and take a proctored exam in an approved testing location.

The Program consists of a total of eight modules, a Field Development Project (FDP) and an individual research project.

Entrance Requirements 

Students wishing to apply to the program require a Degree in engineering or a science discipline. Minimum English scores of TOEFL 550 (manual) or 213 (computerized), or IELTS 6.0 are required. If you have completed your undergraduate degree in English or work in a company where English is the primary language used then you are not required to submit TOEFL or IELTS scores.

    Please note on your online application form "I wish to study in Abu Dhabi with NExT." to ensure that your application is processed properly. 

  • TOEFL SCORE 550 manual or 213 computerized (if applicable, please refer to Entrance Requirements above)
  • Two Reference Letters

Fees

The fee per short course in Abu Dhabi, including course material and exam fee, is 4,300 US$. There is a total of 8 short courses; students may choose to attend some or all of the courses. It is however mandatory to pass the exams for all modules to obtain the MSc. in Petroleum Engineering.

The fee for the Field Development Plan project and the Research Paper is 2,250 US$ each.
