Rig Awareness and Familiarization

Participants in this course will be given the chance to learn about rig related activities in the oil industry.  The five main themes that participants will discover include petroleum reservoirs, rig types, rig equipment, direction drilling and horizontal wells, and well completion.  The petroleum reservoirs theme will provide attendees with a unique opportunity to learn about the various phases of the life of a reservoir.  The topic of rig types will show participants the different types of rigs used on land and offshore, as well as rig safety and rig personnel functions.  The directional drilling and horizontal wells theme will cover Measurement While Drilling (MWD) equipment, along with methods used to drill horizontal wells and multi-lateral wells.  The fifth and last topic of well completion will cover casings, tubing, cementing, and perforations.

Interactive practical training combined with classroom sessions and workshops tours will enhance the participants’ understandings of the various rigsite operation topics.  At the end of each day participants will take part in question and answer sessions, which will enhance and reaffirm what was learned that day.  Attendees will have the opportunity to participant in daily visits to training rigs, cementing units, wireline units, artificial lift units, a well testing well and workshop, a MWD and LWD workshop, a coiled tubing training rig, and a completions workshop.  Each of these visits will give participants a better understanding of various operational processes employed in drilling operations.

    Day 1

Rotary Drilling and Training Rig Visit

    • Petroleum reservoirs
    • Life cycle of a reservoir
    • Seismic data acquisition
    • Drilling operations and rig systems
    • Training rig visit

The first day of this course will begin with an induction, introduction, and safety briefing for the participants.  After this, participants will learn about petroleum reservoirs and the life cycle of a reservoir, including the various phases of reservoir development, exploration, appraisal, and development.  Participants will have the opportunity to learn about such topics as seismic data acquisition, drilling operations, and drilling rig systems.  The day will end with the practical portion where participants will tour a training rig.  This will provide them with an overview of rig system, rig footprint, and standard layout, as well as an opportunity to participant in some rig floor activities.

    Day 2

    Drilling Operations and Well Logging

    • Well design and completion
    • Well logging
    • Wireline training unit visit

On day two, participants will take part in lessons over well design and completions.  Specific topics that will be covered include downhole equipment, drill pipes, centralizers, and stabilizers.  They will also learn about directional drilling, including concepts of horizontal wells and associated well completions.  This day will also cover well logging, including the theory of logging tool physics and operations, tool capability, and data acquisition. The practical portion of this day include a visit to a wireline where participants will learn about wireline tools, logging units, and well design.

    Day 3

    Well Completions

    • Tubing and packers
    • Completion techniques and associated surface equipment
    • Cementing operations
    • Cementing training units

The third day will teach participants about how and why wells are completed. Well tubing, packers, and other downhole completion tools will be explained.  Different completion techniques and the associated surface equipment will be illustrated.  Attendees will also learn about cementing operations.  The practical portion of this day will include a visit to a cementing training pad to familiarize participants with bulk handling and storage, slurry mixing, pumping units, and cement head manifold arrangements.

    Day 4

    Well Testing

    • Perforation and conveyance methods
    • Drill stem testing equipment and setups
    • Surface testing equipment
    • Acidizing and hydraulic stimulation

Day four will introduce participants to well testing.  With the knowledge of completions from day three participants will learn about perforating and conveyance methods, drill stem testing and setups, surface testing equipment, and the reasons why and how acidizing and hydraulic stimulations are performed.  The practical portion of this day will include a visit to a well testing workshop, where participants will review perforating equipment and assemblies.  They will also have an orientation on well testing surface spread, as well as a review of wellheads, chokes, and separators.  The practical session will end with a visit to a stimulation training pad where participants will have an opportunity to practice hydraulic fracture treatment using a stimulation simulator.

    Day 5

    Artificial Lift and Coiled Tubing

    • Artificial lift techniques and equipment
    • Coiled tubing rig
    • Coiled tubing rig visit
    • Artificial lift systems

The last day of the course will have participants focusing on artificial lift and coiled tubing.  Participants will learn about artificial lift techniques and equipment commonly used in production enhancement.  Coiled tubing rig units (CTUs) will be covered, including the setup, principle components, and their purpose.  The practical element of this last day will be a visit to training CTU’s (both for offshore and onshore setup) and a tour of an artificial lift system workshop to review downhole pumps and surface control units commonly used.

  • Audience

New hires and personnel with limited exposure to drilling equipment and activities will gain the most from this course. Other operating company personnel and service company personnel who’s responsibilities involve a working knowledge of drilling rigs and operations should attend this course.

  • Prerequisites

Participants with some exposure to oilfield operations is beneficial though not essential.

    Abu Dhabi

The buildings in Abu Dhabi are too diverse to be characterised by one particular architectural style, especially as they have been built over a long period of time and drawn on a wide range of influences.

Abu Dhabi is home to a number of cultural institutions including the Cultural Foundation and the National Theater. The Cultural Foundation is home to the UAE Public Library and Cultural Center. Various cultural societies such as the Abu Dhabi Classical Music Society have a strong and visible following in the city. The recently launched Emirates Foundation offers grants in support of the arts, as well as to advance science and technology, education, environmental protection and social development. The city also stages hundreds of conferences and exhibitions each year in its state-of-the-art venues, including the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC) which is the Persian Gulf's largest exhibition center and welcomes around 1.8 million visitors every year. The Red Bull Air Race World Series has been a spectacular sporting staple for the city for many years, bringing tens of thousands to the waterfront. Another major event is the Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition and Conference (ADIPEC).

The diversity of cuisine in Abu Dhabi is a reflection of the cosmopolitan nature of the society. Arab food is very popular and is available everywhere in the city, from the small shawarma to the upscale restaurants in the city's many hotels.

Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH) is the city's main aviation hub and the second busiest airport in the UAE.
