Borehole Seismic Acquisition, Processing and Operations

This course gives an overview of all aspects of Borehole Seismic acquisition operations, survey design, and data processing techniques. A strong focus is placed on practical exercises, which are conducted using a test well at the Schlumberger Training Centre and Schlumberger Wireline Borehole Seismic equipment.

The practical exercises will consist of running the Versatile Seismic Imager (VSI) with up to 3 x 3 component receivers in a 772 foot deep well and acquire Vertical Seismic Profile (VSP) data using an airgun source (Run 2). The airgun source will be a 3 x 150 cu.in. G-Gun cluster, deployed in a 5 m diameter, 5 m deep purpose built gun pit and will be operated with the TRISOR in-sea source controller. 

A hybrid wireline cable will be used, allowing recording during the VSI run, heterodyne Distributed Vibration Sensing (hDVS) seismic data.

For Run 1 the VSP will be acquired using a Vibrator as the energy source. The Vibrator is a Mertz M-18HD Vibrator buggy operated with the Pelton VibPro controllers.

Schlumberger’s VSI-MaxWell acquisition software will be used for Runs 1 & 2, and all QC features of the software will be used and shown to ensure optimisation of data quality. In one of the field practicals, the VSI tools will record in continuous mode as in microseismic surveys. One offset source will be deployed for tool 3-axes orientation. A Petrel 3D ray-tracing plugin and Omega Borehole Seismic software will be used during the data analyses demonstrations.

The attendees are encouraged to assist with the rigging up/down of all equipment, Wireline Winch driving, data acquisition, and data analysis.
