Simulation of Naturally Fractured Reservoirs

This course will cover the oil recovery mechanisms in fractured reservoirs, which undergo the waterflood or gas cap expansion and gas injection.  How dual porosity reservoirs are modeled with modern numerical simulators and simulation exercises will also be covered.  Participants will also learn about the fundamentals of fractured reservoirs, the geological aspects, and welltesting in fractured reservoirs.  Oil recovery mechanisms, advanced topics in dual porosity simulation, and dual simulation of fractured reservoirs with a compositional simulator will also be covered.  The simulation of triple porosity systems will be discussed during the duration of this course.

Note:  Approximately half of this course will be devoted to problem solving in a workshop format using related software applications.

    Day 1

    Fractured Reservoir Fundamentals 

    • Fundamentals

    • Workshop 1: Developing a Dual Porosity E100 Data Set

    On day one, participants will be introduced to the fundamentals of fractured reservoirs.  The day will continue with discussions on geological aspects of fractured reservoirs, single and network fracture development, assumptions, comparisons, and input variables.  A simulation of fracture reservoirs will also be covered.  The day will end with a workshop over developing a dual porosity E100 data set from a single porosity data set.

    Day 2

    Welltesting in Fractured Reservoirs 

    • Welltesting
    • Single vs. dual porosity welltests
    • Workshop 2: Comparison of Buildup Tests

    This day will focus on welltesting in fractured reservoirs.  Participants will learn about the comparison of single and dual porosity welltests and the advantages of each.  The day will end with the second workshop over the comparison of buildup tests in single and dual porosity reservoirs.

    Day 3

    Oil Recovery Mechanisms

    • Oil expansion
    • Advanced topics in dual porosity simulation
    • Workshop 3: Simulation of a Single Matrix Block

    Day three will begin with a discussion of oil recovery mechanisms in fractured reservoirs.  Topics covered on this day will include oil expansion, sudation, gravity forces, capillary forces, diffusion, and convection.  Advanced topics in dual porosity simulation and the calculation of gravity imbibition and drainage will also be covered.  Dual porosity-dual permeability, viscous displacement option, integrated capillary pressure, and matrix relative permeability modifications will also be discussed.  To end the day, attendees will participate in the third workshop over the simulation of a single matrix block with a comparison with dual porosity ECLIPSE.

    Day 4

    Diffusion and Discretized Matrix Model

    • Workshop 4: Testing and Comparison of Advanced Options

    On this day participants will learn about diffusion and the discretized matrix model.  Other topics that will be discussed include the alternate gravity drainage model and grid generation in fractured reservoirs.  The day will end with the fourth workshop over the testing and comparison of advanced options in dual porosity ECLIPSE.

    Day 5

    Simulation of Fractured Reservoirs and Porosity Systems

    • Workshop 5: Sensitivity Study of Oil Displacement
    • Workshop 6: Developing a Dual Porosity E300 Data Set, Sensitivity Study, and Comparison

    The last day of this course will focus on simulations of fractured reservoirs with a compositional simulator and of a triple porosity system.  Workshop five will also be on this day and will be over the sensitivity study of oil displacement from a fractured reservoir and the Quarter-Five-Spot Model.  The day will end with the sixth workshop over developing a dual porosity E300 data set, sensitivity study, and comparison with single porosity.

    Completion of the Applied Reservoir Simulation and the ECLIPSE 100 Software course is required.  Attendees must have experience using ECLIPSE 100.  Attendance of the ECLIPSE 100/200 advanced course is not required, but recommended.
