    Petrel Reservoir Geomechanics

This course introduces reservoir engineers and subsurface consultants to some basic concepts in geomechanics and the Petrel Geomechanics and VISAGE software products.

Apart from introducing the concepts of reservoir geomechanics, this training discusses the types of data used for geomechanical modeling in the petroleum industry, along with some of the geomechanical effects observed in oil and gas reservoirs and the subsurface during hydrocarbon production. The course shows how to create geomechanics reservoir models that provide insights into the pre-production in-situ stress field, as well as the geomechanics behavior observed as stress, strain and displacement results when coupling with reservoir flow models, and how to plot and visualize the geomechanical effects over time.

The training is structured to show you how to perform the following tasks:

    • Build 3D geomechanical reservoir models using Petrel platform.
    • Run geomechanical simulations using VISAGE* to compute stress, strain and displacements.
    • Couple the geomechanical models to reservoir fluid flow simulations to show changes over time.
    • Demonstrate how the Petrel Geomechanics workflow can enhance results derived from other SLB modeling products such as Eclipse* and INTERSECT*.

In addition, the training includes the execution of wellbore stability analysis within the 3D geomechanical model to optimize drilling trajectories and the safe mud weight window.

    Day 1

Fundamentals and getting started in Petrel Geomechanics

      • Revisiting geomechanics concepts, understand the Petrel GM workflow, and start generating geomechanical grids

    Day 2

    Generating the geomechanical model

      • Define materials, populate properties, generate quick analytical insights, pore pressure, boundary conditions

    Day 3

    Defining and launching VISAGE simulations

      • Specify simulation options, run simulations, and visualize basic geomechanical results

    Day 4

    Post-processing simulation results

      • Apply post-processing for insights into wellbore stability, fault and fracture criticality, and more

Reservoir Engineers and geotechnical consultants with good prior reservoir engineering and Petrel knowledge

    • Some fundamentals of Geomechanics
    • Petroleum Geomechanics and Reservoir Geomechanics
    • The use of Petrel Geomechanics software

This training assumes prior knowledge of geomechanics, rock mechanics, or mechanics in general. Recommended course: Fundamentals of Petroleum Geomechanics.

Pre-existing knowledge of oilfield operations and procedures is useful to provide context to the discussion.
