Geology

field trip: south pyrenean foreland basin, spain

Course Description

Objectives:

Dynamics of sedimentary basins and the deformation - sedimentation relations

The program for the field trip is split into two parts: - Special lessons and - A field session

Lessons points: - The major tectonic structures; - The major sedimentary structures; - The major depositional environments; - The stratigraphic principles; - Seismic interpretation; - The various types of sedimentary basins; - The deformation - sedimentation relation. Field session points: - Formation of a foreland basin; - Recognition of synsedimentary structures; - Introduction to the production of stratigraphic logs; - Recognition of the principal sedimentary facies; - The deformation sedimentation interaction; - Basin synthesis .

We shall approach the field from basin scale to reservoir scale, associating geological observations with geophysical data (the outcrop - seismic relation; interpretation of seismic lines in similar environments), integrating reservoir characteristics (what are good reservoirs? where are the permeability barriers?).

Learning objectives: The students will be able to: - Recognize and interpret tectonic structures; - Recognize and interpret sedimentary structures; - Recognize and interpret sedimentary facies; - Recognize synsedimentary structures; - Create stratigraphic logs; - Create a panorama; - Create cross-section; - Create a simple geological map; - Interpret a seismic line; - Analyse the sedimentary evolution of a basin.
