Production Data Analysis - Shale Gas

Production analysis requires handling and conditioning large volumes of multiple source, multiple frequency data, identifying and synchronizing events and assigning the appropriate production rate to each event. These critical steps enable production engineers to make efficient interpretation and analysis of the data and to optimize well productivity using advanced methodologies. This 2-day course discusses Production Modelling and Production Data Analysis for Shale Gas reservoirs.

    Day 1

    Introduction to Unconventional Production Fundamentals – In day one, the course will cover the key production mechanisms and concepts of unconventional system and how they differ from conventional production.

    Production Modeling – The modeling of the production system with numerical reservoir simulation will be introduced, with emphasis on state-of-art fracture simulation technology. Discussion will continue on production modeling, with latest analytical method for production engineering workflows. Concept of time-lapse nodal analysis will also be introduced to extend the traditional nodal analysis workflow to unconventional system.

    Day 2

    Production Data Collection – First the course will review various reservoir and well monitoring and control technologies and how the techniques differ in unconventional versus conventional production. Common data quality problems and quality check procedures will be introduced.

    Production Data Analysis – Then various data analysis techniques will be introduced, including data mining, rapid screening methods, decline curve analysis, pressure transient analysis (PTA) and rate transient analysis (RTA). Focus of this course will be on rate transient analysis. The course will start on why rate transient analysis is utilized commonly in unconventional production. The principles of rate transient analysis will be reviewed, including typical flow regimes in multistage hydraulically fractured horizontal wells, superposition rule, material balance time, RTA diagnostic plots, flow regime identification and parameter interpretation. Some real field RTA examples will be reviewed.

    This course is designed to implement a comprehensive learning module of production data interpretation and analysis including the principles of production fundamentals, technologies and workflows with applications and field examples for unconventional recourses.
