Introduction to Symmetry Process Simulation Software Platform

This course will focus on teaching participants how to use the Symmetry (of SLB/Virtual Materials Group) software application in order to model different oil and gas related processes for design analyses. This software will also assist in evaluating the performance of existing oil and gas facilities, process equipment, and process plants. Participants will complete the preliminary process of flow diagrams, mass and energy balance, and equipment sizing based on Symmetry software operations. This course will also cover how to build, navigate, and optimize process simulations using Symmetry at the foundation level.
Day 1 - Fundamentals of Symmetry and Process Modelling

    • Show basic flow sheeting steps in the process workspace in Symmetry.
    • Discuss thermodynamic principles including property package selection.
    • Build a propane refrigeration loop model.
    • Understand the basics of gas processing.
    • Construct a shallow cut gas plant model.
    • Combine the refrigeration loop model with the gas plant model to understand how individual models can be integrated.
    • Learn/apply the intermediate flow sheeting tips and tricks.

The first day will focus on understanding and reinforcing the basic concepts involved in building process simulation models. Starting with basic thermodynamic principles and ending with slightly more advanced simulation tools, by the end of the first day participants will have a better understanding of process simulation and Symmetry.

Day 2 - Fluid Characterization and Gas Conditioning

    • Investigate different methods of characterizing hydrocarbon fluids in Symmetry.
    • Overview of common gas contaminants and different gas conditioning processes.
    • Build models to study the process of removing contaminants from a gas.
    • Look at a sample acid gas injection/CCS.
    • Engage in discussions to identify the key parameters of different processes.

The second day will build on the concepts discussed in the first session, the focus will be on different methods available to characterize fluids and the more common gas conditioning processes. This includes gas sweetening and dehydration, and acid gas injection as a way of disposing of the captured acid gases.

Day 3 - Dynamics, Pipe Networks, Flare & Safety, and Integration

    • Overview of the pipe and flare workspaces in Symmetry.
    • Construct a small multi source gathering network including parallel flow lines and connect it to an existing process model.
    • Build a basic flare network model including multiple relieving scenarios to investigate the performance of an existing process safety system.
    • Run an isolated blow down scenario using the dynamics de-pressuring assistant.

The third day will introduce the other workspace and engines that are available in Symmetry and how they can be used to model different aspects of a process plant. Starting with a gathering network, and then moving into a study of existing flare systems. These models will then be integrated to be able to study some of the impacts they may have on each other. The dynamics de-pressuring assistant will also be shown and used to do a blow down study on an isolated vessel.
