Petrel Geological Interpretation - RILS (Remote Instructor-Led Series)

This is a Remote Instructor Led Series (RILS) training. The remote classroom delivery is a modality that takes advantage of the instructor led training content, while allowing the same content to be delivered remotely. All training sessions will be delivered online with no face-to-face classroom attendance.

The Petrel Geological Interpretation - RILS course leads the participants through a valuable learning experience about key geological interpretation workflows – well correlation, seismic interpretation, volume estimation, and uncertainty analysis – and their application in the Petrel E&P software platform.

The geological interpretation workflow presented in this course is geared towards prospect assessment at the early stages of exploration, involving volumetric calculations based on surfaces created from well tops, seismic interpretations, or both.

The Petrel Geological Interpretation - RILS course will be delivered over a total of twenty-two (22) Hours; i.e. in five (5) sessions lasting 4.5 Hours each, and a third session which will last 4 Hours .

Each participant will need the following for an optimal experience of the course:

    • Windows-based PC
    • USB headset
    • Internet access
    • Second monitor or tablet for the course manual(s)
    • Webcam

    Session 1 : Modules 1 & 2 (Part 1)

    (4.5 Hours)

    • Project setup, data import and QC
    • Data display in the Well section window

In Petrel, to define the quality of the final results, it is crucial to properly set up a project and import data. In this phase of a project, you assemble all the primary sources of data. The data is combined and interpreted, and then used to define a depositional model that describes its reservoir characteristics.

During this session, the participants will create a new Petrel project and define its initial configuration. They will then learn about iteratively importing and quality controlling data. After loading the data, they will be introduced to the best practices for displaying well data optimally in preparation for Well correlation.

    Session 2 : Modules 2 (Part 2) & 3

    (4.5 Hours)

    • Data display in the Well section window
    • Well correlation

Following up with the introduction best practices for well data display, this session will lead the participants through the steps for visualizing and preparing the data previously loaded for the Well correlation process. Then the focus will be placed on the Well correlation workflow, tools and functionalities which will enable the interpretation of the well logs and their spatial relationship.

Well correlation or well logging is the technique applied to identify corresponding log patterns that can indicate similar units in time and stratigraphic position. A thorough characterization of the data allows the geoscientists to accurately determine the reservoir elements, leading to better decisions.

    Session 3: Modules 4 & 5

    (4 Hours)

    • Well log creation
    • Well log editing

Well logs are one of the essential sources of data for interpretation and accurate decision-making.

During this session, in line with the well logs interpretation process, the participants will first learn different methods - including artificial neural nets - for generating new logs such as facies or net-to-gross leveraging other existing well logs.

Then, considering the importance of well logs and how they can inform the decision-making process, the participants will discover and learn to use each of the various options Petrel offers for inspecting and editing well logs to control and ensure their quality.

    Session 4: Module 6

    (4.5 Hours)

    • Seismic interpretation

This course leads the participants through a valuable learning experience about key geological interpretation workflows in Petrel, including seismic interpretation.

Session 4 will focus on the seismic interpretation process, workflow and tools for the main framework items (faults and horizons). The participants will learn about:

          • setting up the displays to make seismic interpretations
          • performing simple fault and horizon interpretations
          • QC and editing seismic interpretations for faults and horizons

    Session 5: Modules 7, 8, 9 & 10

    (4.5 Hours)

    • Build surfaces
    • Map-based volumetrics
    • Uncertainty analysis in MBV
    • Data presentation and reports

Surfaces are 2D maps based on specific input data. These maps present a variety of information, such as structural features or thickness distribution. The first part of this session will focus on how to generate surfaces or maps based on different types of inputs, using the appropriate algorithms for various input data such as seismic interpretations, points (point sets, well tops), and contour lines (general polygons).

Then, having generated maps, the participants will practice how to make an alternative quick and accurate volume estimation without building a Structural model or a 3D grid, through the Map-based volume calculation process - which can be used during prospect assessment. They will also learn about the basic concepts of uncertainty analysis and structural uncertainty and their application in Petrel with and without a grid.

Finally, since it's important for the data used for interpretation and the interpretation results to be visualized and used in reports, the participants will learn about plotting and creating montages in Petrel.
