Petrel Reservoir Engineering - RILS (Remote Instructor Led Series), Series 1

This is a Remote Instructor Led Series (RILS) training. The remote classroom delivery is a modality that takes advantage of the instructor led training content, while allowing the same content to be delivered remotely. All training sessions will be delivered online with no face-to-face classroom attendance.

This course introduces reservoir engineers and asset teams to the interactive Petrel reservoir engineering tools to construct and manage simulation models.

The complete course consists of 3 series:

This is Series 1 and will be delivered in three (3) sessions lasting ~ four (4) Hours each. An intensive agenda also implies a homework after each session. Hence full-time commitment is expected from participants.

In this series, you are introduced to Petrel user interface. You will build a 3D simulation model inside Petrel based on geological input data.  Add wells, and well control rules, create black oil fluid models and rock physics functions, submit the model to the simulators.

The hands-on exercises are structured to enable the trainee apply the software skills obtained during training and cover most of the Petrel simulation workflows. Overall, pre-processing and post-processing of simulation data will be done within the Petrel environment.

Each participants will need the following to succesfully attend the course:

    1. Windows-based PC*
    2. USB Headset
    3. Internet Access capable for 720HD video-streaming
    4. Second monitor or tablet (highly recommended)
    5. Webcam (highly recommended)

*Hands-on exercises will be performed using locally installed Petrel and Eclipse software; hence client machine must satisfy min. requirements. Alternatively, practical sessions can be accessed through DELFI Cloud Environment (subject to availability).

    Day 1
    • Reservoir engineering in Petrel
    • Petrel user interface

This session introduces you to the Petrel* E&P software platform and provides an overview of the workflows. You learn about the added value of working in a unified modeling environment platform with domain driven workflows. You also learn about the advantages of using one application within an asset team, especially in terms of data integration and team collaboration. You learn where to find help, how to navigate around the Petrel* user interface, and how to set up your project.

    Day 2
    • Rock Physics and Fluid models
    • Simulation initialization
    • Petrel Volume calculation

This session shows you how to use the Define simulation case process to set up and initialize a simulation case. This process allows you to pull together the 3D grid, fluid model, rock physics functions, and development strategy to create a simulation case.

In this module, you learn about how to make static volumetric calculations. You also learn about some fundamental differences between geological and simulation grids. The disparity between volume calculations in static and simulation models also is discussed.

    Day 3

    Dynamic modelling

    • History strategies
    • Prediction strategies

In this session, you learn how to define the dynamic well behavior of your simulation using Petrel.

Development and exploration petroleum engineers, reservoir engineers and geoscientists.

    • Introduction to Petrel
    • Model initialization and volume calculation
    • Dynamic modeling: development strategies

General knowledge of reservoir engineering, and/or petroleum geology, geophysics.
