Petrel Structural Modeling: Corner Point Gridding Workflow - RILS (Remote Instructor Led Series)

This is a Remote Instructor Led Series (RILS) training. The remote classroom delivery is a modality that takes advantage of the instructor led training content, while allowing the same content to be delivered remotely. All training sessions will be delivered online with no face-to-face classroom attendance.

This course introduces the essentials of building structural models with Corner point gridding process. It covers the data preparation for corner point gridding, fault modeling, pillar gridding, make horizons, make zones, and make layers processes. It also discusses quality control methods for horizons & faults and complex structural models construction, including fault truncations, reverse fault modeling, modeling of salt diapirs and creating pillar grid faults from structural framework. The course also presents the Structural uncertainty analysis and automatization processes.

The course will be delivered over a total of 17 Hours; i.e. in four (4) sessions lasting four (4) Hours each, except the first and fourth sessions which will each last ~4.5 Hours.

Each participant will need the following for an optimal experience of the course:

    • Windows-based PC
    • USB headset
    • Internet access
    • Second monitor or tablet for the course manual(s)
    • Webcam

    Day 1

    Session 1 : Modules 1, 2, 3 & 4 (Part 1)

    (4.5 Hours)

    • Introduction to subsurface modeling
    • Introduction to Corner point gridding
    • Data preparation for Corner point gridding
    • Main faults modeling

In addition to introducing Subsurface Modeling and the Corner Point Gridding method, this session will focus on how to use the tools in Petrel to prepare and solve common problems associated with input data and also on how to define and generate the main faults in a model, based on the input data prepared.

    Day 2

    Session 2 : Modules 4 (Part 2), 5 & 6

    (4 Hours)

    • Main faults modeling
    • Pillar gridding
    • Make horizons

In this session, the participants will learn about generating a 3D grid through the Pillar gridding process, inserting stratigraphic horizons into the 3D grid created and optimizing the horizons with respect to honoring the shape of the faults.

    Day 3

    Session 3 : Modules 7, 8, 9 & 10

    (4 Hours)

    • Quality control of horizons
    • Quality control of faults
    • Make zones and Layering processes
    • Truncations

Quality control should be done at every stage in the Corner point gridding workflow, and in particular as soon as the fault model is generated. A suite of operations is available that you can use to QC horizons and faults, and identify critical structures. This session will start with quality control of horizons and faults. Then, the participants will learn about creating geological zones, reflecting the geological deposition and inserting minor faults in a 3D model.

    Day 4

    Session 4 : Modules 11, 12, 13 & 14

    (4.5 Hours)

    • Reverse fault modeling
    • Modeling of salt diapirs
    • Structural uncertainty analysis
    • Introduction to Quality Reporting

This session will present the methodologies for modeling reverse faults and salt domes using the Corner point gridding. Salt domes are diapiric masses of salt, of considerable economic importance because they can develop oil traps. Then, after discussing the uncertainty concepts, the paticipants will learn to implement the structural uncertainty procedure in Petrel. Finally, they will be introduced to the Quality Reporting functionality, which allows users to generate comprehensive reports for data objects quality check and auditing.
