Petrel Structural Modeling: Structural Framework Workflows - RILS (Remote Instructor Led Series)

This is a Remote Instructor Led Series (RILS) training. The remote classroom delivery is a modality that takes advantage of the instructor led training content, while allowing the same content to be delivered remotely. All training sessions will be delivered online with no face-to-face classroom attendance.

This course presents the Petrel workflows used to build structural frameworks and geocellular grids integrated with domain knowledge. It aims to improve your reservoir modeling skills and help you achieve a better understanding of the overall reservoir structure.

The training includes:

    • An introduction to subsurface modeling
    • An overview of the structural framework modeling workflow
    • Discussions about the different types of fault complexities you are likely to see in a hydrocarbon reservoir and how you can model them with fault framework modeling
    • The construction of the reservoir horizons at both the unrefined and refined stages, with the creation of the zone model
    • How to detect common input data issues, as well as different techniques and tools of quality control to avoid inconsistencies at different stages during the modeling cycle
    • The 2D reconstruction workflow
    • The computation of a depositional space as well as its differences with the 2D reconstruction workflow
    • Structured stair-stepped grids and unstructured depogrids, and advantages and disadvantages for each of the two.

      

    The course will be delivered over a total of 16.5 Hours; i.e. in four (4) sessions lasting four (4) Hours each, except the fourth session which will last 4.5 Hours.

    Each participant will need thefollowing for an optimal experience of the course:

    • Windows-based PC
    • USB headset
    • Internet access
    • Second monitor or tablet for the course manual(s)
    • Webcam

    Day 1

    Session 1 : Modules 1, 2 & 3

    (4 Hours)

    • Introduction to subsurface modeling
    • Structural framework and the concept of VBM
    • Fault modeling


    In addition to introducing Subsurface modeling, this session will present an overview of the Petrel Structural framework modeling workflow and discuss the basics of the Volume-based modeling (VBM) technology. Then, the participants will sequentially learn how to define a new structural framework and generate a fault framework based on provided input data. 

    Day 2

    Session 2 : Module 4

    (4 Hours)

    • Boundary definition and model construction


    This session will focus exclusively the first two tasks which must be completed when building a structural model: Model boundary and Model construction. The participants will learn about the workflow and tools available and also about addressing common input data issues and performing models quality check.

    Day 3

    Session 3 : Modules 5 & 6

    (4 Hours)

    • Enhancing quality checks and modeling
    • Model refinement and Depospace calculations


    This session will start by presenting an overview of the 2D reconstruction workflow, an important process to quality check the horizons and faults in a 2D setting and run horizon and fault interpretation in a reconstructed space. In addition to the model refinement and zone creation process, the participants will discover how to compute a depospace for a more accurate depositional properties model.

    Day 4

    Session 4 : Modules 7 & 8

    (4.5 Hours)

    • Structural gridding for stair-stepped grids
    • Structural gridding for depogrids


    The Structural gridding process allows you to construct structured stair-stepped corner point grids and unstructured depogrids from the Petrel Structural framework model. In this final session, the participants will learn about the characteristics and workflows for structured stair-stepped grids and unstructured depogrids. 

    Development and exploration geologists, geophysicists, petroleum engineers, managers, reservoir engineers and technical personnel with prior experience in Petrel.

    • Create structural models in Petrel using the Volume-based modeling algorithm
    • Create the fault framework based on provided input data
    • Assess the fault framework and edit the result
    • Run the Model construction process
    • Create and use the Horizon filtering attribute in the Model construction workflow
    • Use important structural operation tools to quality check your model
    • Incorporate the 2D reconstruction tool with horizon modeling in the structural framework
    • Use advanced options of the Volume-based modeling algorithm for horizon modeling
    • Refine and construct zones for the structural framework model
    • Build a depositional space to create an unfolded and unfaulted representation of the structural framework model
    • Construct a stair-stepped corner point grid from a structural framework
    • Generate the stair-stepped grid using the Depospace transform
    • Use a stair-stepped grid in a dual-scale reservoir model (coarse-fine-coarse) workflow
    • Build a depogrid from a structural framework model
    • Create segmentations of your stair-stepped grids and depogrids

    General knowledge of petroleum geology, structural geology and geophysics.

    Petrel Fundamentals, Getting started with Petrel eLearning or equivalent Petrel experience is necessary.
