Practical Application of Project Management for Experienced Project Managers

Practical Application of Project Management for Experienced Project Managers is a course that is designed as the “next step” of development for a project manager who has taken a basic course in project management and is seeking to reinforce or further the skills they have already built.

The course is designed to step beyond the mere teaching of the PMBOK® Guide and compare the processes of the host organization with the PMBOK® Guide and the ISO project standard (21500).

Basic courses usually teach the concept of Precedence Diagramming Method with the most accessible of task relationships, the Finish-to-Start relationship.  This course takes this a couple steps beyond, introducing and practicing additional task relationships (Finish-to-Finish, Start-to-Start, and Start-to-Finish) along with “near-critical path” management and hammock tasks added to make for a more real-world, practical understanding.

Basic courses teach Earned Value Management with calculations of the Estimate at Completion (EAC) of the budget with current progress.  This advanced course teaches alternate methods of calculating EAC given different assumptions and also teaches a practice, Earned Schedule Management (ESM), which was just added to the 6th edition of the PMBOK® Guide.  ESM allows for the calculation of a predicted end date of a project (the Independent Estimate At Completion – IEACtime) given current performance.  Completing this course, students will be able to more accurately predict the outcomes of project in cost and time dimensions given current performance.
