    Geology of Clastic Reservoirs

    This course offers an in-depth analysis of the distributions, geometries and sedimentary architectures of clastic reservoir facies. Participants will learn the criteria for distinguishing reservoir facies using wireline log and core data, how to interpret facies distributions at regional and field scales, and how to integrate this information into exploration and development projects. Reservoir geometry, continuity and effects on diagenesis on clastic reservoir quality will be tackled.

    The course emphasis is on fluvio-deltaic facies, with coverage of alluvial fan, fluvial, eolian, shoreface, deltaic, shelf and deep-water environments. Lectures cover the basics; supporting details of sedimentary facies characteristic, geometry, depositional sequences and oil distribution are drawn from numerous studies worldwide Exercises utilizing log and core data provide an opportunity for participants to practice the methodologies addressed in the course.

    Day 1

    Continental clastic reservoir

    Introduction of facies analysis.

    The continental depositional systems; characteristics, geometry, sequences and oil distribution:

    • Alluvial fan.

    • Braided stream reservoirs

    • Meander streams reservoirs

    • Eolian reservoirs

    Day 2

    Transitional clastic reservoir

    Transitional depositional systems; characteristics, geometry, sequences and oil distribution:

    • Deltaic reservoirs

    • Tidal reservoirs

    • Shoreface reservoirs

    Day 3

    Shelf & deep-water clastic reservoir

    The shelfal and deep water depositional systems; characteristics, geometry, sequences and oil distribution:

    • Shelfal facies reservoirs.

    • Slope facies reservoirs.

    • Deep water reservoirs.

    Characteristics of clastic reservoirs

    Basic clastic reservoir characteristics.

    Effect of diagenesis on reservoir quality.

    Reservoir continuity, heterogeneity and reserve calculation.

    Methods of explorations (seismic interpretation, wire-line logs, structural and isopach

    Maps, well correlation, ….etc.).

    Sedimentary basins and petroleum systems.

    Exercises.

    Day 5

    Clastic Sequence Stratigraphy

    • Sequence stratigraphy: general concepts.

    • An overview on sequence straitgraphy in clastic depositional systems.

    • Exercises.
