Design of Land 3D Seismic Surveys with OMNI 3D®

This three-day hands-on training course provides students with the foundations needed to use OMNI 3D® in a full range of quality control and design tasks for land seismic acquisition planning from field QC to advanced design analyses. This course teaches how to create surveys for the different acquisition configurations, perform fold analyses, insert infilling lines, and use ray tracing and OMNI target analysis to select optimal acquisition parameters.

    Day 1

Basic Land Survey Design Concepts and Most Common Acquisition Configurations

    • Introduction: the land survey design workflow
    • OMNI 3D® interface and project tree description
    • Project management
    • Orthogonal surveys
    • Fold plots: Subsurface fold, unique fold, effective fold, cube of fold with depth.
    • Offset distribution plots
    • Azimuth distribution plots
    • Skewed surveys
    • Staggered surveys
    • Brick surveys
    • Converted wave orthogonal surveys
    • Offset Vector Tiles (OVTs) and other minimal datasets
    • Interaction with Bing maps
    • VSP surveys

At the end of the session the student will be able to explain parallel, orthogonal areal and random acquisition geometries. They will be able to explain the essential acquisition parameters and how to select them. They will be able to demonstrate the different elements of the OMNI 3D® interface and create and edit orthogonal, skewed, staggered and other land geometries in OMNI 3D®.

    Day 2

Production Tools and 2D Ray Tracing and Wave Equation Modelling

    • SPS files
    • Obstacles, editing source and receiver stations
    • Boundaries
    • Plot tab: tools to create images for reports
    • Reports
    • Status files
    • 2D ray tracing modelling and analyses
    • 2D wave equation modelling

At the end of the session the student will be able to import and export surveys in SPS format, edit surveys and move, toggle, insert and delete stations. They will be able to layout a survey inside a given boundary and efficiently create images and reports. They will be able to use the Status Tool to automatically update plots with newly acquired data. They will be able to create 2D earth models for 2D ray tracing and wave equation modelling and be able to use ray tracing analyses and synthetics for acquisition parameter estimation.

    Day 3

3D Ray Tracing and Target Analysis

    • Target analyses: Migration aperture, resolution, Maximum Offset, Amplitude Attenuation etc.
    • 3D Bin Grid Velocity Models analyses
    • 3D ray tracing model
    • 3D synthetic datasets
    • Illumination
    • Footprint
    • PSTM response
    • Fresnel Zone
    • AVO
    • Array analyses

At the end of the session the student will be able to create a 3D earth model, use the model to perform target analysis and create 3D synthetics using ray tracing. They will be able to perform illumination of a target and use the Workshop tools to perform analysis to predict footprint, PSTM response and AVO response for a survey.

  • Topics

Main concepts of 3D land seismic survey design

Different land acquisition configurations commonly used: orthogonal, skewed, staggered, understand their advantages and disadvantages and learn to lay them out in OMNI 3D®

2D and 3D earth models to perform ray tracing analysis, illumination and create synthetic seismic data in OMNI 3D®

Use of the OMNI 3D® Workshop tools to analyse and select the essential land acquisition parameters: bin size, maximum and minimum offset, migration aperture, shot interval, and fold.

  • Audience

This class is suitable for geophysicists and geologists wanting to learn how to plan and design land 3D seismic surveys with the OMNI 3D® software package.

  • Prerequisites

A basic understanding of the seismic acquisition concepts. No prior experience with OMNI 3D® is required.
