Concepts of Deterministic Petrophysical Rock Typing for Reservoir Characterization with VILT

Concepts of determininstic petrophsyical rock typing is an essential component of reservoir petrophsyics and characterization.  This course is designed to delivered using VILT (virtually instructor led training) and delivered in real time.  The course will be taught in 4 hour sessions over a 3 day period and is delivered using the WebEx or similar platform”

This course enables participants to understand the fundamental concepts applied pore geometry based methods using porosity, permeability and mercury injection capillary pressure analysis to determine petrophsycial rock types. Common petrophsyical rock type (PRT) methods such as Winland, Leverett, Pittmann, FZI and RQI are discussed during the course. Participants, compare the predicted pore throat radius and petrophysical rock type to well log based water saturation in depth space and cross-plot analysis.

Participants are introduced to statistical methods to determine the number of PRT needed for a well analysis.

Participants complete a concept workshop using Excel, so the process is transparent to the users.

    Day 1

    Course Introduction (Why are Petrophsyical Rock Types Important)

    • The concept of pore throat radius and capillary pressure
    • Comparison of Winland, Pittmann and FZI equations
    • Excel workshop 1 (Pore Throat Size and Data Summary)
    • Quality checking lab pore throat radius to predicted pore throat radius
    • Excel workshop 2 (MICP - PRT Groupings with Semi-Log, Intrusion Plots and Data Quality Checks)

    Day 2

    Compaping Facies, Winland and FZI to Initial Water Saturation

    • Excel Workshop 3 - Create a Winalnd style permeability vs. porosity cross plot with lines of iso-pore throat sizes
    • Compare Facies, Pore Throat Radius Indicators and log computed Swi using cross-plots and depth plots
    • Excel Workshop 4 - Determine a FZI and RQI values for each data point
    • Well Analysis Workshop 1 - What is controlling initial Sw

     

    Day 3

    Determining the Number of Petrophysical Rock Types using Statistical Methods such as Cumulative Distribution plots or Probalbility Plots

    • Excel Workshop 5 - Determine the number of PRT needed using CDF analysis
