Advanced Seismic Data Acquisition and Processing | Blended course

Seismic provides technology with which we can "look" into the subsurface. It is a key enabler in the search for hydrocarbons. In this course the emphasis is on acquiring and processing the data such, that reliable quantitative interpretation can be done. This involves using diagnostics that indicate the correctness of the applied acquisition configuration and the processing steps applied. An important diagnostic is the local Point-Spread Function (PSF), that shows the resolution, or rather lack of resolution, of the data provided to the interpreter. Comparing the PSF’s of different survey configurations enables choices to be made on which survey is more appropriate for the targets. It will be shown how this is done and also how the PSF’s can be used as deconvolution operators to obtain a final optimum data set.  The course consists of studying literature, following videos and presentations, making exercises in which the theory is applied and using quizzes to re-enforce the learning. Moodle, a course management system is used, facilitating interactions.

This course is a blended course. It is lead remotely by the instructor that has daily direct interactions with the trainees for several hours. Trainees are self-learning for the rest of the day by doing exercises and going through the course material.

The course consists of presentations, videos, and exercises. The presentations, also made available in pdf, are animated power point shows. The videos are either related to the exercises or general, some related to professional societies. In the exercises the methods discussed in the presentations are applied using computer programs. The solutions are discussed. Also, the course contains quizzes which are meant to reinforce the learning. Each quiz consists of multiple-choice questions.

All those involved in either designing or supervising acquisition and processing with emphasis on the appropriateness in view of the exploration and production objectives. The course is targeted at asset geologists and geophysicists, acquisition and processing experts.

The lectures and exercises deal with the fundamentals of wave propagation, survey design, resolution requirements, different acquisition strategies (sparse, hybrid and areal geometry, blended sources, coil geometry, symmetric sampling), sampling and aliasing, velocities, use of various data domains, time and depth imaging, Full-Waveform Inversion, local illumination, resolution & Point-Spread-Functions, Time-Depth Conversion using raytracing and its relation to depth migration, Anisotropy, Fracture detection & quantification, Time-Lapse and Machine Learning as a tool to assist acquisition & processing.

An understanding of the role of Seismic in the context of exploration and production and a good foundation in Geology, Geophysics & Physics. A pre-requirement quiz can be taken to check whether knowledge of Geology and Geophysics is sufficient to follow the course.
