Advanced Cementing

Level: Advanced | Type: Classroom | Discipline: Drilling Technology

By the end of this training course, participants will learn to:

  • Understand cement manufacturing process, cement hydration mechanisms, the different types of API cement and the carbon footprint of cement in well operations.
  • Identify cementing slurry properties, understand the role of cementing additives, how they work in the slurry and be able to select the correct additives to achieve desired slurry properties.
  • Identify cementing laboratory equipment and API/ISO laboratory test performed for oil well cementing.
  • Understand flow regimes and strategies to achieve mud removal and good cement placement.
  • Select centralizers for specific well environment, interpret API/ISO tests performed on centralizers and stand-off simulations.
  • Identify the causes of gas or fluid migration during cementing and techniques to prevent gas migration.
  • Apply cementing best practices for challenging conditions such as loss circulation, deepwater, HPHT, horizontal wells, geothermal and carbon capture underground storage (CCUS).
  • Understand the principles of cement mechanical properties and select cementing properties to be able to withstand pressure and thermal cycles during the life of the well.
  • Apply best practices and simulation software to place cement plugs in a wellbore successfully.
  • Understand and apply cement squeeze techniques and best practices to repair zonal isolation or cure loss circulation events.
  • Identify the different methods used to evaluate cement isolation and be able to interpret cement bond logs.
  • Understand how cement functions as a primary and secondary well barrier in a well and what are the industry standards for cement well barrier acceptance criteria.
  • Become familiar with Cementing New Technologies used to solve industry challenges, such as loss circulation, sustained casing pressure, deepwater, CCUS, P&A and HPHT.
  • Gain deep knowledge on how BHST and BHCT are measured / calculated and used in cementing operations.
  • Perform the quality control of a cement job execution in the field.
