Practical Marine Time Processing with Omega

This course will provide knowledge and understanding of how to use the Omega software processing package to process a marine 3D seismic dataset through a basic time processing sequence. It will include parameter testing from example flows, and how to convert these into production flows. The use of the Interactive Velocity Analysis application (InVA) will be covered to pick a migration velocity field.

Alongside this the participant will learn the appropriate QC for each step of the processing sequence and how to sort data to different domains. At the end of this class participants will be have the skills needed to be a contributing member of a production processing team.

    Day 1

    Introduction, Reformat and Noise Attenuation

    • Marine data reformat
    • Noise attenuation
    • Linear and swell noise
    • Wavelet processing

At the end of this session the student will be able to reformat an example SEG-D dataset and explain the key parameters. They will be able to explain the key points of data sorting and be able to parameterize flows to sort the data into different domains. They will be able to set up flows for 2D noise attenuation to remove linear noise and swell noise. Basic wavelet processing is covered for designature and deconvolution.

    Day 2

    Demultiple

    • Demultiple techniques
    • GSMP
    • WLS Radon

At the end of this session the student will be able to parameterize example flows for Generalized Surface Multiple Prediction (GSMP) and Weighted Least Squares Radon (WLS Radon). They will be able to discuss the key parameters for each technique and QC the results.

    Day 3

    Regularization and Velocity Picking

    • Regularization
    • Velocity picking

At the end of this session the student will be able to use a basic technique for pre-migration regularization. They will be able to explain the key parameters and required QC steps. They will prepare the dataset for velocity picking and pick an initial set of velocities.

    Day 4

    Velocity QC

    • Velocity QC
    • Mute and horizon picking
    • Interpolation and smoothing

At the end of this session the student will be able to perform vertical and horizontal QC of the picked velocities and use the mute overlay to visualize the stretch mute on the gathers. The student will learn how to pick the water bottom in SeisView and view it in InVA. In the interpolation and smoothing worksheet the student will learn how to use these options to prepare the picked velocities for migration.

    Day 5

    Migration and Stack

    • Migration
    • Mutes
    • Final stack
    • Class review

At the end of this session the student will be able to prepare the data for Kirchhoff pre-stack time migration. They will learn how to parameterize an outer trace mute for stacking and a select a final stack workflow with appropriate filtering and scaling. Other processes such as the use of gun and cable statics will be shown as well as typical QC procedures. The class will round up with a review of the material covered and a chance to ask further questions.

This course is intended for geophysicists with a basic understanding of Omega who wish to learn how to use the software to process a simple marine time workflow.

    • Reformat and sorting
    • Noise attenuation
    • Velocity picking and Interpolation
    • Residual statics and migration
    • Final stack and post-stack processing

An understanding of the concepts underlying seismic data processing and common data processing challenges. Participants without any prior knowledge of Omega must have taken the Fundamentals of Omega class before enrolling for this class.
