    Flare Systems

Pressure relief systems, including flare systems, are vital in the oil and gas industry for handling a wide variety of situations.  In some cases non-combustible gases including steam, air, and nitrogen are safely vented to atmosphere.  In other cases elaborate systems for the safe and responsible disposal of vented gases may be required.  The purpose of this course is to develop a working knowledge, in participants, of the different systems that are used to prevent pressurization above a system’s design pressure, for venting during an unusual or emergency situation, and for normal depressurization during a shutdown.

The flare system is an essential part of the relief and depressurizing mechanism associated with safe plant operations.  It is vital that when called upon to operate, it functions as designed and does not introduce new hazards at a time of emergency.  Participants will learn about the overpressure situation and how the flare header receives the flammable and toxic materials to be safely burned at the flare ensuring safe disposal and environmental compliance.

This course will give participants the fundamental knowledge on relief and flare systems to enable them to safely conduct operating and maintenance procedures and to be aware of emergency operations as related to the plant process safety systems.

    Day 1

    Relief Gas Systems Overview

    • Flow diagrams and P&IDs
    • Systems, equipment, and components
    • System criteria and process safety management systems

On day one, participants will gain an understanding of the relief and flare systems including normal and emergency requirements, system monitoring and control, as well as start up and shut down logic parameters.  Relief and flare system components and equipment will be studied to show their importance and reliability.  The day concludes with a discussion of maintenance issues associated with relief and flare systems with particular attention given to process safety management systems.

    Day 2

    Relief Gas System Operation

    • Technician responsibilities
    • Monitoring systems and procedures
    • Environmental and safety device regulatory compliance

Day two of the course will focus on operation, maintenance, and safety procedures associate with relief and flare systems.  Technician’s responsibilities for the operation, monitoring, and inspection in order to adhere to regulatory compliance criteria and awareness of potential emergency situations will be discussed in detail.  The day will conclude with a detailed discussion of regulatory compliance and process safety management criteria for the relief and flare system.  Their components will be discussed including the concept of car sealing valves and testing of safety relief devices.

    Day 3

    Thermal Oxidizers

    • Principle of operation
    • Components and equipment
    • Environmental compliance

On the last day of this course, participants will gain an understanding of the configuration and operation of various types of thermal oxidizer systems.  Operation, maintenance, and safety procedures associate with thermal oxidizer systems will be reviewed while stressing safety and environmental compliance and concerns.

This course is mainly targeted to process technicians, process technologists, instrumentation personnel, and maintenance personnel. The course can also be applicable to employees working with equipment purchasing, procurement, storage, job planning, as well as immediate supervisors to the working technicians.

Participants should have some recent exposure to oil and gas facility terminology.
