    Stuck Pipe Prevention

This course will cover a practical review of stuck pipe incidents and the techniques employed to prevent its occurrence.  Participants will have deep involvement in the analysis and discussion of real cases of stuck pipe events, the root causes and the solutions implemented.

Special attention will be given to the diagnosis of SP condition through the rig warning signs and to the implementation of first actions and remedial procedures (fishing or side tracking), following the evaluation of fishing economics and operational options.

    Day 1

    Stuck Pipe Prevention Measures 1

Mechanisms for Stuck Pipe – Causes, Occurrence, and Prevention

    • Introduction to Stuck Pipe: Root Causes and Conditions
      • Stuck Pipe Management
    • Solids Induced Pack Off: Causes, Occurrence
      • Prevention and Warning Signs
    • Differential Pressure Sticking: Causes, Occurrence
      • Prevention and Warning Signs
    • Wellbore Geometry Related Sticking: Causes, Occurrence
      • Prevention and Warning Signs

Participants will receive a quick review of stuck pipe problems and their huge impact on the economic and feasibility of drilling projects. The day will move forward with a detailed analysis of stuck pipe mechanisms illustrated with group discussion of case histories and class exercises.

    Day 2

    Stuck Pipe Prevention Measures 2

    • Stuck Pipe Mechanisms Diagnosis and Identification
    • First Responses and Secondary Actions in Stuck Pipe Events
    • Wellbore Instability - Causes and Remedies

Participants will learn the identification of the stuck pipe mechanisms and the recommended first actions using the tools available, illustrated with group exercises.

Both Hole Cleaning Practices for low and high angle wells, and wellbore stability problems, will be complemented with group exercises, discussions and case history.

    Day 3

    Stuck Pipe Prevention Measures 3

    Tools and Procedures;

    • Hole Cleaning Practices and procedures for Low and High Angle Wells
    • Offset Well Analysis and Well Design for Stuck Pipe Prevention
    • Recommended Practices for Stuck Pipe Avoidance in Well Design and Execution

Day three will be focus in the interpretation of Rig Site Warning Signs through real time monitoring of drilling parameters. Then a discussion of Offset Well Analysis as a tool for prevention of stuck pipe events.  The day will end with a detailed discussion of the operational practices for stuck pipe avoidance.

    Day 4

    Stuck Pipe Prevention Measures 4

    • Drilling Jar - Principles of Design, Placement and Operation
    • Introduction to Fishing Operations - Fishing Economics
    • String Separation Options

Participants will learn additional practices for making connections, tripping procedures, reaming and back reaming operations. The day will continue with selection, installation, and operation of the Drilling Jar, as well as string separation options once the drill pipe becomes stuck.
