    PetroMod Advanced Topics

This course teaches the PetroMod* petroleum systems modeling workflows needed to build more sophisticated models. The course combines lectures on key aspects of petroleum systems modeling with a wide selection of practical software exercises.

This class covers a number of elective components in the PetroMod Education Services offering. Students successfully completing this course will be able to handle the most advanced challenges when building a petroleum systems model.

Please note that the total content available comprises 10 days of training grouped into 7 elective module packages. Each package is further subdivided into smaller modules. Practical experience has shown that the topics of interest vary widely by company and by the types of projects in which participants are engaged.

The available elective modules packages are:

    • Model Construction Techniques
    • Modeling in Structurally Complicated Geological Environments
    • PetroMod Salt Modeling
    • Advanced Thermal Calibration
    • Fluid Properties and Petroleum Migration
    • Special Situations – Gas Hydrates and Biodegradation
    • Advanced Simulator Features

The Advanced Topics class usually is customized to suit individual companies or groups of users. You are encouraged to select elective module packages of interest and to build a 5 day class. However, the class is flexible; both elective module packages and individual modules may be selected to form a custom class, which can be delivered in a timeframe lasting anywhere from 3 to 10 days.

For further details, discuss your requirements with your account manager, local NExT representative, or other local SIS representative.

    Day 1

    Model Construction Techniques (0.5 Day)

3D modeling requires several additional maps to construct a model (facies, TOC, HI, etc.). Students need to be aware of these maps and different tools can be used to load or create them. Some areas can be further refined in the model with high resolution (local grid refinement) techniques.

    • Map Editing (0.25 Day): Map Editor interface, importing maps, how to smooth a map, how to fill a hole in a map, how to change the grid resolution of a map, how to make all maps the same size, how to convert units for a depth map, how to correct intersections
    • Local Grid Refinement (LGR) (0.25 Day): Introduction to local grid refinement, workflows, LGR model analysis and implication

    Day 2

Modeling in Structurally Complicated Geological Environments (3.0 Days)

Sediment space is primarily created by structurally and thermally induced subsidence. The structural evolution of sedimentary basins controls sediment deposition and forms structural traps and pathways for hydrocarbons. The timing of structural activity during petroleum system development, therefore, is critical for exploration success. You will learn how to handle erosion events and paleo geometries, and how to incorporate structurally restored paleosections into your models.

    • Erosional Modeling (0.5 Day): Introduction, building erosion models in PetroMod 2D; with multilayer erosion, erosion and deposition at the same time, building erosion models in PetroMod 3D; multi-layer erosion, multiple erosion of a single layer
    • Fault Geometry through Time (0.5 Day): Gridding in PetroMod, why the pre-faulted layer geometries need to be edited, editing fault geometries in simulation preview

    Day 3

Modeling in Structurally Complicated Geological Environments (3.0 Days)

    • Advance Fault Properties (0.5 Day): Theory of fault modeling in PetroMod, assign fault properties in PetroMod, fault migration methods in PetroMod, charge analysis and fault properties
    • 1D Thrusting (0.5 Days): Introduction of the concept, project set up, model building of thrust and paleo models, the thrusting tool, simulation preview, simulation, analyze the output

    Day 4

Modeling in Structurally Complicated Geological Environments (3.0 Days)

    • 2D TecLink Model (1 Day): Import the restored paleosections, assign the ages, create the blocks, define and assign the blocks, grid each paleosection, define and assign the facies, assign the faults, simulate the model, calibrate the model

    Day 5

    PetroMod Salt Modeling (2 Days)

Timing of salt movement in a sedimentary basin is of exceptional importance for HC maturation. Students will learn how to use the Salt Tectonics table and the Facies Piercing tool to build up a geologically consistent basin model in the presence of salt tectonics.

    • 2D Salt Modeling (1 Day): Theory, introduction to salt modeling in PetroMod, interpreting the structure: timing of salt tectonics, editing initial geometry, age assignment table, gridded model, facies definition and assignment, salt tectonics and facies piercing tools, improve the geometry of the simulated model

Geologists, basin and petroleum system modelers, and technical personnel with prior experience using PetroMod.

This class covers a number of elective components in the PetroMod Education Services offering.

The available elective modules packages are:

    1. Model Construction Techniques
    2. Modeling in Structurally Complicated Geological Environments
    3. PetroMod Salt Modeling
    4. Advanced Thermal Calibration
    5. Fluid Properties and Petroleum Migration
    6. Special Situations – Gas Hydrates and Biodegradation
    7. Advanced Simulator Features

PetroMod Fundamentals course, OG-SW1-SIS10780, or significant experience using PetroMod software. Attending PetroMod Applied Petroleum Systems Modeling Workflows course, OG-SW2-SIS15280, is suggested.
