Grounding plays a vital protective role in an electrical system. Proper grounding provides shock protection, ensures protective relays work properly, ensures system voltages are stable, and provides protection against lighting and static discharge.
This course has been designed to provide participants with an understanding of the principles of grounding and how grounding systems operate. Participants will also gain an understanding of how these systems are installed, tested and maintained.
Upon completion of this course, attendees should have a better understanding of the principles related to grounding systems within the oil and gas industry. Having this knowledge will help each technician develop confidence and professional enthusiasm, therefore, increasing their efficiency. The knowledge that technicians gained from this course will be further expanded by on-job training and practical experience they will receive throughout the duration of their career.
Operating characteristics of grounded and unground systems will be discussed. The hazards associated with lightening and lightening protection systems used in typical oil and gas facility will be covered. Basic design and installation of ground electrodes will also be explained.Day 2
On the second day, the participants will be familiarized with grounding systems used in offshore installations. Grounding power supplies to computer systems and grounding signal wiring to avoid effects of ground loops will be explained. Techniques used to control static buildup in the oil and gas industry will be discussed. Methods and instruments used to test effectiveness of grounding systems will also be covered.
This course is designed for electrical technicians, maintenance planners, and supervisors with operation and maintenance responsibilities in an industrial plant.
