    HAZMAT and Spill Control

    Course Objective

    • This program focuses on the unique response and personal protection challenges that responders face during a hazardous spill and a Hazardous Materials (HazMat) incident and prepares emergency responders from all disciplines to recognize and identify hazardous material and to mitigate a HazMat incident by preventing further contamination of people, property, and the environment.

    • Classroom - Listening and contributing to discussions and exercises (group Discussions and workshops and exercises).

    Awarding Body:

    • Certificates from IIRSM – UK

    Pass requirements:

    • Written exam with 60%

    • The basic hazard and risk assessment techniques
      • What is a substance hazardous to health
      • Who’s affected by hazardous substances at work
      • What is COSHH & HAZMAT and who has duties under it
    • Selection and use of proper personal protective equipment provided to the First Responder.
      • Respiratory protective equipment (RPE)
      • Hazard warning labeling and packaging
      • Safety data sheets
      • Requirements for PPE and RPE
      • Monitoring Exposure in the Workplace
    • The basic hazardous materials terms.

    • The basic control, containment, and/or confinement operations within the capabilities of the resources and personal protective equipment available with their unit
      • Implementation of basic decontamination procedures
      • Tests, reconditions, repairs, modifies, marks, or otherwise presents packaging as qualified for use in the transporting of hazardous materials
      • Prepares hazardous materials for transportation
    • The relevant Standard Operating Procedures and Termination Procedures

    • Overview of Oil Spill Response 
      • Fate and Behavior of Oil and Impact of Oil Spills
      • Health and Safety Aspects of Oil Spill Response
    • Oil Spill Response Techniques
      • At-Sea Response
      • Dispersants
      • Mechanical Recovery (Response Equipment)
      • Temporary Storage
      • In-Situ Burning (Optional)
      • Absorbents
      • Post-incident Operations

    • In charge of law enforcement agencies
    • Emergency medical services
    • Fire/rescue service
    • Public works/utility workers
    • Emergency management
    • Public health
    • Healthcare providers


    • An understanding of the basic hazard and risk assessment techniques
    • An understanding of how to select and use proper personal protective equipment was provided to the First Responder.
    • An understanding of basic hazardous materials terms
    • An understanding of how to perform basic control, containment, and/or confinement operations within the capabilities of the resources and personal protective equipment available with their unit
    • An understanding of how to implement basic decontamination procedures
    • An understanding of the relevant Standard Operating Procedures and Termination Procedures
