HSE Fundamentals for Fresh Graduates in the Oil & Gas Industry

Level: Awareness | Type: Classroom | Discipline: Health Safety and Environment

Course Summary

·         This course provides a comprehensive introduction to Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) practices in the Oil and Gas Exploration and Production (E&P) industry. It is designed to help participants understand the fundamental principles of HSE and their critical role in protecting personnel, assets, and the environment in oil and gas operations.

·         The course begins with an overview of the oil and gas E&P industry, its operational activities, and the associated risks. Participants will then explore the core concepts of health, safety, and environmental management, including hazard identification, risk assessment, and risk control methods commonly used in the industry.

·         Key topics include personnel and asset security, environmental protection and sustainability, occupational health and industrial hygiene, transportation safety, and hazard analysis and risk control (HARC). The course also covers essential operational safety practices such as the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), fire safety, electrical safety, pressure safety, Permit to Work (PTW) systems, and Lock-Out/Tag-Out (LOTO) procedures.

·         Through practical examples and industry best practices, participants will gain the knowledge needed to recognize workplace hazards, apply preventive safety measures, and contribute to a strong safety culture within oil and gas operations. The course aims to build a solid foundation in HSE awareness and risk management for personnel working in or supporting the oil and gas industry.

Course Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Explain the structure and operations of the Oil & Gas Exploration and Production (E&P) industry, including key activities, terminology, and associated operational risks.
  2. Understand the principles and importance of Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) in the oil and gas industry and their role in protecting people, assets, and the environment.
  3. Describe the fundamental concepts of health, safety, and environmental management, including hazard awareness, risk prevention, and regulatory compliance.
  4. Recognize the importance of personnel and asset security and identify basic measures to protect employees, facilities, and operational assets.
  5. Identify environmental and sustainability considerations in oil and gas operations, including environmental protection, pollution prevention, and responsible resource management.
  6. Understand the principles of occupational health and industrial hygiene, including the recognition and control of workplace health hazards.
  7. Demonstrate awareness of vehicle and passenger safety practices to reduce transportation-related risks in oil and gas operations.
  8. Identify workplace hazards associated with oil and gas activities and understand methods used for effective hazard recognition.
  9. Apply the principles of Hazard Analysis and Risk Control (HARC) to assess risks and implement appropriate control measures.
  10. Recognize the importance and proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in minimizing workplace exposure to hazards.
  11. Understand the fundamentals of fire safety, including fire prevention, fire hazards, and basic emergency response actions.
  12. Identify electrical hazards and apply basic electrical safety practices to reduce the risk of electrical incidents.
  13. Recognize pressure-related hazards associated with pressurized systems and understand safe operating practices.
  14. Explain the purpose and key components of a Permit to Work (PTW) system and its role in controlling hazardous work activities.
  15. Understand the principles and procedures of Lock-Out/Tag-Out (LOTO) to ensure safe isolation of energy sources during maintenance and servicing activities.
