    Subsurface CO2 Storage Simulation

Reservoir simulation is a vital component of multi-disciplinary CO2 storage studies, as engineers need to study CO2 behavior over the lifetime of the project. This requires specialist features, as well as all the software functionality used for dynamic simulation of oil and gas fields.

This course introduces you to the basics of the reservoir simulation aspect of carbon capture sequestration (CCS) evaluation, including the physical phenomena and modeling approaches. It also demonstrates CCS evaluation method using a set of dynamic simulation options for CO2 storage with reservoir simulators Eclipse and INTERSECT:

    • Geological storage of CO2 in saline aquifers (CO2STORE)
    • CO2 injection in depleted gas reservoirs, for EGR and/or storage (GASWAT)
    • Three-phase compositional modeling of CO2 injection in depleted oil reservoirs, for EOR and/or storage (CO2SOL)

    • Introduction to geological storage for CO2 and relevant physics
    • CO2 storage modeling options and data requirements
    • Injection in a saline aquifer (CO2STORE)
Exercises: Convert an E300 case to CO2STORE simulation

    • Injection in a gas reservoir with aquifers (GASWAT)
      • Set up and Initialization
      • CO2 solubility in water
      • Mineral trapping

    • Injection in an oil-depleted reservoir or for EOR (CO2SOL)
      • CO2 solubility in water validation
      • CO2SOL case set up and initialization
      • INTERSECT capabilities for CO2 storage
