Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) System

This course will provide the participants with the knowledge necessary to understand and enhance their mechanical aptitude in the area of Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) maintenance and operation.

The purpose of this course will be to develop a working knowledge of the various types of rotating and reciprocating equipment used in HVAC systems, as well as the different procedures and regulations associated with operation and installation of this equipment.  Upon completion of this course the participants will be equipped with the basic knowledge required to install and repair HVAC equipment and their related systems.

Technicians will be required to have a technical comprehension of HVAC equipment.  The technicians that participate in this course will be better equipped to repair and maintain, as well as install and commission HVAC equipment and their associated systems within their responsibilities.  They will also be able to increase the knowledge within the maintenance team, thereby increasing the safe and efficient productivity of the mechanical systems.  With further on-job training and experience the technicians will be able to attend more advanced training and therefore enhance the maintenance team’s capabilities and knowledge.

    Day 1

    Identification

    • Types of refrigeration compressors and chillers
    • Component types
    • Characteristics and operating principles

Day one will cover the types of refrigeration compressors and chillers.  Participants will learn about the different types of components associated with refrigeration compressors and chillers as well as their characteristics and operating principles.  The attendees will be able to describe the characteristics and operating principles of the various units.

    Day 2

    Installation

    • Heat transfer
    • Temperature and pressure measuring instruments
    • Procedures and principles
    • Piping methods and power-off procedures

The second day will focus on the installation of HVAC equipment and systems.  Participants will learn about heat transfer in cooling systems, the terms and concepts used in the refrigeration cycle, temperature and measuring instruments, and how to identify commonly used refrigerants.  Performing basic power-off maintenance procedures applicable to cooling systems and describing piping methods and procedures for refrigeration and chilled water systems will also be discussed.

    Day 3

    Maintenance

    • Environmental considerations
    • Hazards and safety considerations
    • Installation and maintenance procedures
    • Troubleshooting

Maintenance will be the main focus of the last day.  Environmental considerations when decommissioning and disposing of refrigeration and air conditioning compressors will be discussed.  Participants will learn to identify the hazards and safety considerations, the installation and maintenance procedures, and effectively applying analytical troubleshooting techniques.  The identification and description of procedures used to install refrigeration compressors and chilled water compressors will also be covered.

This course is mainly targeted to mechanical technicians working in the field as an introduction or refresher. The course can also be applicable to employees working with equipment purchasing, procurement, storage, and job planning, as well as immediate supervisors to the working technicians.

The participants of this course should have completed training in compressors and pumps.  This will allow them additional information in the theory and operation of compressors and associated equipment.
