    Heat Transfer Equipment

Participants in this course will be introduced to heat transfer equipment, which is a specialized device that assists in the transfer of heat from one fluid to other.  A heat exchanger is the most common heat transfer equiment used in the oil and gas production industry.  There are many different designs that will be introduced in this course.  In some cases, a solid wall may separate the fluids and prevent them from mixing.  In other designs, the fluids may be in direct contact with each other.  In the most efficient heat exchangers, the surface area of the wall between the fluids is maximized while simultaneously minimizing the fluid flow resistance.  All cases will be discussed in detail and participants will learn about the use of fins or corrugations and how they are sometimes used to increase the surface area and to induce turbulence.

This course will provide participants with a good understanding of heat transfer equipment applications.  Oil and gas upstream and downstream processing places special demands on heat exchangers, such equipment must not only withstand corrosive media, two-phase mixtures, as well as extreme pressures and temperatures, but also be extremely compact.  The fluids may be single compounds or mixtures. Typical applications involve heating or cooling of a fluid stream of concern, evaporation, or condensation of a single or multicomponent fluid stream, and heat recovery or heat rejection from a system.

In this course participants will learn about the types, construction, configuration, and operation of heat exchangers and hot oil systems found in the oil and gas industry. Participants will also gain an awareness of preventative maintenance, inspection, and repair of heat exchangers.

This course is mainly targeted to process technicians, process technologists, instrumentation personnel, and maintenance personnel. The course can also be applicable to employees working with equipment purchasing, procurement, storage, job planning as well as immediate supervisors to the working technicians.

Participants should have some recent exposure to oil and gas facility terminology.
