    Basic Confined Space Safety

    Course Objective

    • Confined Spaces are regarded as high-risk areas with strong indications and areas of harm that must be identified, targeted, and controlled.
    • This course helps to assess the importance of identifying different types of confined spaces, based on the permit-to-work system.
    • The risks and hazards with confined space systems are also assessed, based on the type of confined space and the nature of the work being done shall also be assessed.
    • The trainee should also understand how to follow the workplace procedures in the confined space, be able to identify any hazards from the confined space based on those procedures, and based on that how to evacuate safely if something goes wrong.
The following points shall be discussed in the course:
    • Understand what a confined space is and what criteria it should have to be a confined space.
    • Understand the steps to a permit to work system.
    • Understand how a permit to work the system is implemented in the workplace.
    • The controls which are needed to prevent the spread of risks and hazards from the confined space and how to maintain them.
    • Elaborate on the importance of ventilation in a confined space.
    • The role of a confined space supervisor in providing safety for others in a confined space system.
    • The role of a flagman in a confined space working system.
    • The role of a firewatcher in a confined space, particularly in a hot work permit.
    • What the individual worker should follow the permit to work system.
    • What to do if something goes wrong during confined space work.
    • How to evacuate from the confined space during an emergency.

    • The importance of inspecting a confined spacebefore issuing the permit.
    • Issuing the permit
    • Receipt the Permit
    • What the organization needs to assess beforestarting the work
    • Clearance/Return to Service and the differencesbetween them
    • Extension and when it is necessary

Session 4 – Permitto Work System

    • Definition of a Permit to Work
    • The importance of inspecting a confined spacebefore issuing the permit.
    • Issuing the permit
    • Receipt the Permit
    • What the organization needs to assess beforestarting the work
    • Clearance/Return to Service and the differencesbetween them
    • Extension and when it is necessary
    • Provide different examples of Permit to WorkSystems that may be required with a confined space permit

Session 5 – Group Discussion of providing the students withprevious and various permit to work documents to understand the procedure.

    Day 2

    Session6 – Hazard Identification

    • Discuss theworking at height hazard of working at a height.
    • Discuss the difficulty of communication in a confined space setting.
    • Discuss theadequate access and egress to and from a confined space.
    • Discuss thedangerous of toxic gases and reactive agents in the confined space.
    • Discuss thepossibility of fires and/or explosions in the confined space.
    • The potentialdifficulties of multiple hazards culminating in a confined space.
    • Discuss scenarioswhich can lead to emergency evacuation in a confined space.

Session 7 – Controls of a Confined Space

    • Using a safety harness and a tripod sequencesystem to ascend and descend from a confined space system.
    • Using different communication devices to relayinformation in a confined space.
    • The usage of ladders, ropes, and other liftingdevices to assisting in ascending and descending a confined space.
    • Discussing different types of gas detectors thatare used by workers and are located on-site.
    • Discussing different types of operations whichcan lead to fires and/or explosions and how they can be safely controlled.
    • The importance of ventilation in a confinedspace.
    • The roles and responsibilities of all personnelin a confined space system in maintaining its controls.

    Session 8 – Emergency Response

    • Assessing confined space access and egressduring an evacuation.
    • Assessing adequate behaviors during confinedspace emergencies.
    • How to safely assist entrants in leaving theconfined space.
    • How to coordinate with the attendant andsupervisor in confined space rescue.
    • Prompt behavior and response before and after aconfined space rescue.
    • How to evacuate safely from the area afterleaving the confined space.

Session 9 – First Aid Response
