    Crude Oil and Water Treatment

Many oil production processes present a significant challenge to oil and water treating equipment design and operations.  The nature of crude oil emulsions changes continuously as the producing field depletes and conditions change with time.  These changes create the need to consider future performance when designing treatment systems and those changes require an understanding of scale and upscaling.

This course will explore all the theories and technologies involved in crude oil and water treatment, starting with emulsion theory formation, stabilization and the mechanism, through the technology to destabilize and separate water from oil.  After the oil has been dehydrated, some oil will still not meet contract specifications due to the amount of salt present.  For this reason, the course will also discuss desalting technologies and processes needed to achieve the required oil specifications.

Due to environmental regulations and water injection specifications, produced water must also be treated. The course will provide a summary of the technologies, processes, and operational conditions needed to achieve the required specifications for the produced water.

    Day 1

Oilfield Processing, Production Fluid Separation, and Emulsion

    • Typical oilfield processing
    • Production fluid separation
    • Potential operation problems
    • Emulsion

Upon completion of this day the participants will be able to understand the technologies and processes for a typical oilfield, operating center concepts, and production fluid treatment objectives.  Production fluid separation will also be covered on this day including the processes, design, and potential operation problems.  The first day will end with a discussion on emulsion theory, stabilization, destabilization, de-emulsifier, and tests.

    Day 2

Oil Treatment Basics, Treaters, and Dehydration Performance Factors

    • Oil treatment basics
    • Oil dehydration technologies and processes
    • Dehydration performance factors

On the second day, participants will learn about the oil treatment basics.  Specific topics to be discussed will include dehydration technologies and processes, desalting, Stoke’s Law of Settling, variable affecting crude oil dehydration, and electrostatic theory.  De-emulsifier requirements and selections and a group discussion on chemical used will also be included on this day.

    Day 3

    Crude Oil Desalting

    • Main problems of salty crude oil
    • Desalters: equipment and technology
    • Operation and design considerations
    • Life cycle costing for selection considerations

The focus of day three will be about crude oil desalting. Topics that will be covered on this day include the main problems of salty crude oil, oil desalting principles, equipment, processes, technologies, and the life cycle costing for selection considerations. Operation and design considerations will also be covered. The day will end with attendees participating in exercises over what they have learned.

    Day 4

    Water Treatment

    • Properties of produced water
    • Environmental regulations
    • Water specifications
    • Factors affecting the water treatment

Day four will cover water treatment.  The properties of produced water, environmental regulations, water chemistry issues, and factors affecting the water treatment will be discussed.

    Day 5

    Water Treatment (Continued)

    • Process and equipment design
    • Chemical treatment
    • Chemicals used in water treatment
    • Study of water treatment real cases

The last day will continue the discussion of water treatment, to include equipment, solid removal, and chemical treatment. Participant will also learn about the water treatment process, equipment design, and de-oiling technologies. Participants will also get a chance to look at studies of water treatment in real cases.
