    Defensive Driving - Light Vehicles

    Course Objective

    • Driving safely in any route and in any situation is preferable and recommended to avoid accidents that can lead to injury or even death. It is, therefore, important to assess the importance of being able to drive safely and making sure to take off your safety alongside the safety of others on the road. The course is based on the driving environment in the country and company Regulations and aims to minimize death, injury, and damage resulting from Road Traffic Accidents. The course will raise participant’s defensive driving skills, visual skills, knowledge of vehicle limitations, and a driver’s responsibility to other road users. The course will assess the overall competency of drivers on and off the road in order to assess their competency in driving safely. 
    The following points shall be discussed in this course:
    • Pre-use Vehicle Checks.
    • Sacrament of loads.
    • Importance of Vehicle Separation.
    • Reaction Time.
    • Passenger Safety.
    • Desert Driving Techniques.
    • Desert Services Techniques.
    • Procedure to be adopted when stuck in the desert sand.

    • The rules of desert safety.
    • Drugs & Alcohol effects.

    Day 1 

    Session 1 – Definition and explanation of Light Vehicles and their purpose 
    Session 2 – Pre-use Vehicle Checks

    • The importance of inspecting the following components in a light vehicle before usage: 
    • Lights
    • Tires
    • Oil, water, and fluids
    • Brakes and Steering
    • Battery
    Session 3 – Sacrament of Loads 
    • Indicate the importance of Safe Working and Movement Loads of Light Vehicles 
    • Indicate different methods of Load Restraint
    Session 4 – Importance of Vehicle Separation
    • Discussion of normal weather conditions 
    • Discussion of abnormal and/or dangerous weather conditions
    • The adequate distance between two cars in normal conditions 
    • The adequate distance between two cars in abnormal conditions 
    • How to use your blinkers effectively 
    • How to avoid being blinded by blinkers while driving 
    Session 5 – Reaction Time
    Session 6 – Passenger Safety 
    • Adequate behavior for drivers while they have passengers on board
    • Adequate behavior for passengers while onboard 
    • What drivers must remind passengers while seated  
    Session 7 – Desert Driving Techniques
    • Suitable route chart
    • Speed Limits
    • Balancing the vehicle with a weight
    • Being vigilant of their surroundings 
    Session 8 – Procedure to be adopted when stuck in the desert sand
    • How to use the gas 
    • How to use the shovel 
    • How to use traction mats 
    • Why wetting the sand is important? 
    Session 9 – Basic Navigation and Tire Management 
    Session 10 – Drugs and Alcohol Effects
    • Define legal drugs 
    • Define illegal drugs 
    • Indicate the effects of both legal and illegal drugs on the human body 
    • Indicate the usage of prescription medication on the road 
    • Indicate how prescription medication can be used safely while on the road 
    • How alcohol can affect perception

    Day 2

    Session 11 – Group Discussion: Rules, Regulations, and Driver Responsibility, for the country and Company Regulations

    • Trainees shall be shown different laws and regulations and will be assessed on their importance. 
    Session 12 – Daily and Weekly Inspections
    • Indicate the difference between daily and weekly inspections 
    • Why workers should inspect their vehicles 
    • The importance on keep inspection logs as a method of communication 
    Session 13 – Pedestrians 
    • How to drive safely with pedestrians in the area 
    Session 14 – Driving Conditions 
    • How to drive safely in cities, at night, with fog, during the rain, off the road, and/or during a sandstorm 
    Session 15 – Defensive Driving Techniques 
    • Teaching trainees how improper and reckless driving can lead to an increase in accidents.
    • The impact of being an aggressive driver or driving aggravating aggressive drivers increases the risk of accidents.
    • How obeying speed limits and transportation laws decreases the risk of accidents.
    • The importance of not changing lanes excessively to avoid accidents.
    Session 16 – Fatigue Management
    Conditions that can lead to fatigue 
    How mental stress can increase physical fatigue 
    How to avoid micro-sleep during driving 
    The effects of drugs and/or alcohol on fatigue

    Session 17 – Practical Defensive Driving Demonstration by the Instructor

    Session 18 – Practical Defensive Driving by Participants

    Day 3

    • Session 17 – Practical Defensive Driving Demonstration by the Instructor
    • Session 18 – Practical Defensive Driving by Participants

    Any worker that has a vehicle and drives it for work and/or personal purposes.

    • Overall improvement in Off-Road Desert Driving.
    • Learn essential defensive driving techniques the reduce accidents – related costs, injury, and fatalities.
    • To ensure all drivers develop safe, defensive driving habits and attitudes.
    • Reduce insurance claims, lost work time, and vehicle repairs by lowering the number of accidents.
    • Recognize potential driving hazards and demonstrate appropriate driving.
