Development Geology - RILS (Remote Instructor Led Series)

This is a Remote Instructor Led Series (RILS) training. The remote classroom delivery is a modality that takes advantage of the instructor led training content, while allowing the same content to be delivered remotely. All training sessions will be delivered online with no face-to-face classroom attendance.

A profitable development of an oil or gas field starts with a good understanding of the subsurface. As part of a PE team the development geologist interprets subsurface data and provides geological models that form the basis for development planning.

During this course the “development life cycle” starting with the gathering of geological data, the interpretation thereof, the preparation of geological models and the quantification of subsurface uncertainty are discussed. The development geologist is equipped with the skills to construct these models. Attention is given to the impact on field operations and on field management during its entire lifecycle.

In addition to the ones quoted in the course schedule (relating to the Robin Field) dedicated exercises are included throughout the course to ensure participants understand the concepts discussed.

Options: this course can be tailored to pure clastic or pure carbonate reservoirs on Client’s request.

The Development Geology - RILS course will be delivered over five(5) 3-hours sessions.

Session 3

Measurements and Evaluation of Subsurface Data

  • Basic well technology, horizontal wells, well data
  • Log and core data, uncertainties and mapping

Subsurface Development Options

  • Volumetrics, subsurface uncertainties

Session 5

Field Operations and Development

  • Field Operations, Well Design, Geological input

  • Robin Field Exercise 9 Surface Development Options, Project Planning, Phased Costs
  • Impact of Subsurface Uncertainty on Project Economics
  • Basic project economics and financial performance indicators
  • Exercises The Robin Field Project 10 Economics: Determine project economics and sensitivities using an Excel economics spreadsheet

At the end of the course participants will be able to apply geological concepts, construct maps and sections and validate computer-generated interpretations.

They will be able to calculate subsurface volumes and assess their uncertainties.

They will learn how to prepare a well proposal.

They will be able to plan appraisal wells and assess their economic value.

They will acquire practical experience by working on an actual field study in teams.

  • apply geological concepts, construct maps and sections and validate computer-generated interpretations;
  • calculate subsurface volumes and assess their uncertainties.

The participants will learn how to prepare a well proposal, plan appraisal wells and assess their economic value. They will acquire practical experience by working on an actual field study in teams and a better understanding of their own role in the development life-cycle.


Participants need a basic understanding of Reservoir/Petroleum Geology and preferably some 2 – 4 years experience.
