    Essential Coaching Skills for Managers

    The use of effective coaching can unlock employee potential and improve motivation, as well as, in most cases, be far more beneficial than other forms of training and development methods.

    This course will provide attendees with the confidence, skills, and techniques to conduct coaching effectively. As a participant in the course they will learn about the difference between coaching and mentoring, as well as other forms of people development and how to ensure that the correct coaching method for the situation is applied. Participants will learn about coaching models (e.g. GROW, Solution Focused, 4 Stage Model), as well as directive and non-directive approach to coaching. Attendees will also learn about powerful questioning techniques and how to give effective feedback, culminating on producing active individual development plans. They will learn to understand the ethics and guidelines aligned with coaching. In addition, participants will also learn how to apply the same techniques to run a group or team coaching session.

    By the end of the course attendees will have the confidence to coach proficiently, as well as increase the motivation, potential, and development of those they coach.

    Day 1

    Coaching Fundamentals

    • Overview of coaching
    • Coaching as part of an Organizational Development Strategy
    • Coaching vs mentoring vs other development options
    • Directive and non-directive approach
    • Ethics, guidelines, and establishing the coaching contract
    • Use of psychometrics in coaching development
    • How and why people learn: people development methodologies and theories

    Day one will provide the framework around coaching principles and methodologies as a key development tools. It will be interspersed with practical coaching demonstrations and examples from the instructor and involving the participants.

    Day 2

    Models, Techniques, and Skills

    • Skills needed for coaching
    • Coaching Models: GROW, Solution Focused, and 4 Stage Coaching Model
    • Directive and non-Directive development communication
    • Building rapport (essential communication skills)
    • Creating really powerful questions
    • Active listening skills
    • Framing the coaching session: getting the best from an individual
    • Structuring an individual coaching program
    • Practical coaching sessions

    Day two will build on what was learned on the fist day, from understanding of coaching moving into the mechanics of coaching and the structures used. It will concentrate on the behavioral skills and techniques needed to conduct effective coaching sessions, as well as providing the structure needed through appropriate coaching models. The day will continue to be interspersed with practical coaching demonstrations and examples from the instructor and involving the participants.

    Day 3

    Active Coaching Skills and Techniques

    • Giving effective and powerful feedback
    • Building active development plans and coaching diaries and log-books
    • Coaching practice
    • Group and team coaching

    The third day will provide participants with the more detailed techniques and expert tips to enhance the coaching session and to ensure that full benefit is gained. Participants will learn the structure all the way to the end of the coaching session, ensuring that development options are maximized and feedback given is effective. Topics taught on this day will be interspersed with practical coaching demonstrations, as well as full coaching sessions with feedback given from the instructor.

    Managers and senior managers of people or teams from any discipline, including HR/L&D professionals, who wish to learn the skills and techniques to effectively coach and develop individuals to their maximum performance.
