Develop measurable skills and capabilities
Hydrocarbon accumulations in subterranean porous media may display vertical, as well as areal variations of properties. During production, these fluids also go through phase change phenomena as a result of changes in temperature and pressure conditions. These changes can occur at any location in the production circuit including reservoirs, near-wellbore formation, production tubulars, and surface flow lines. Understanding the variations of the fluid properties can impact well placement, production, and reservoir management decisions.
In this five-day workshop, participants will be exposed to various technologies that are currently used in the industry to characterize reservoir fluids in-situ, including heavy fractions like asphaltenes and methodologies, to capture a representative sample. The course will demonstrate the importance of sample handling in the field, as well as in the laboratory. Furthermore, the participants will be exposed to various laboratory measurement techniques and procedures to define various properties. Participants will also get hands on experience in developing mathematical models using equations-of-states (EOS) and the fluid PVT properties for applications in reservoir simulations, production modeling, upgrading, and surface processing. Depending on the location of the course, participants may have an opportunity to visit a PVT laboratory.
Openhole Formation Testing and Sampling Technology
Day one will cover the physics of the formation testing tool including tool configuration, as well as an overview of various modules and their functions. The course will also include examples of log responses and selection of pressure points to establish pressure gradients during pressure testing. The day will then cover sample capturing technologies and overview of various downhole fluid characterization technologies. The day will end with a field example of openhole formation testing tool design.Day 2
Downhole Fluid Characterization Technology
Day two will cover the physics of reservoir fluids including the origin of fluid gradients and compartmentalization. Participants will be given an overview of downhole fluid analysis technology, including mud-filtrate contamination monitoring, live-fluid analyzer, component fluid analysis, and insitu fluid analysis. Field examples will be presented demonstrating the workflow for sample quality control and reservoir characterization. Participants will be exposed to novel asphaltene science and a new equation of state for in-situ crude oil characterization. Also, participants will be exposed to methodologies, establishing reservoir connectivity, downhole pressure measurement, and sampling technologies. Depending on the location, a site visit for physical demonstration of downhole sampling and analysis tool may be arranged.Day 3
Cased Hole Sampling and Laboratory Fluid Characterization Technology
Day three of the course will cover the fundamentals of all fluid sampling during well-testing and production testing using SRS, MPFM, and surface separators. As such, the course will focus on the fundamentals of fluid phase behavior measurements, including laboratory equipment and procedures. The course will provide workflows to develop thermodynamic and transport characteristic models using the measured PVT data and expose participants to hands–on exercise using industry accepted software.Day 4
Laboratory Hydrocarbon Solids Characterization Technology
Day four will cover all the fundamentals of hydrocarbon solids (asphaltene, wax, and hydrate) measurement methodologies, including equipment and procedures. The course will provide workflows to develop mathematical models and demonstrate the value of experimental validations. Participants will then be exposed to hands-on exercises using industry accepted software.Day 5
Fluids and Flow Assurance Analysis Center
Depending on the location, day five will cover a site visit to a fluid and flow assurance characterization center for physical demonstration of equipment and measurement methodologies.
This workshop is designed to benefit multidisciplinary teams including petrophysicist, as well as reservoir, production, completion, and facilities engineers.
Either a four year Engineering or Geosciences degree and five years work experience.
