Geophysical Data Acquisition and Processing | Blended course

Geophysics provides technology with which we can "look" into the subsurface. It is a key enabler in the search for hydrocarbons, minerals, and fresh water. It is also extensively used for monitoring pollution and rejuvenation of polluted sites. The course aims to give a general overview of the geophysical methods that can be applied. These methods are usually separated into non-seismic and seismic methods. Non-seismic covers a wide range, from potential field (gravity, magnetics) to electrical and electromagnetic methods. As seismic remains an important geophysical technology, acquiring, processing and interpreting seismic data are extensively discussed. Pre-stack seismic amplitudes and Direct Hydrocarbon Indicators provide information on reservoir rock and its pore fluids. The course consists of studying literature, following videos and presentations, making exercises in which the theory is applied and using quizzes to re-enforce the learning. Moodle, a course management system is used, facilitating interactions.

This course is a blended course. It is lead remotely by the instructor that has daily direct interactions with the trainees for several hours. Trainees are self-learning for the rest of the day by doing exercises and going through the course material.

The course consists of presentations, videos, and exercises. The presentations, also made available in pdf, are animated power point shows. The videos are either related to the exercises or general, some related to professional societies. In the exercises the methods discussed in the presentations are applied using computer programs. The solutions are discussed. Also, the course contains quizzes which are meant to reinforce the learning. Each quiz consists of multiple-choice questions.

This course is specifically geared towards those involved in projects related to the shallow subsurface such as pollution monitoring, archeological investigations, foundation engineering. In addition, it would benefit those dealing with the often negative (geo)physical effects of production of a field.

The course provides the fundamentals of seismic refraction & reflection methods, their acquisition and processing as well as interpretation (Amplitude versus Offset, Direct Hydrocarbon Indicators based on reflection amplitude changes with source-receiver offset and pore fluid), the use of gravity, magnetic, electrical, and electromagnetic methods (Modelling and inversion to determine depth to basement, presence of reservoirs below salt or volcanic rocks and presence of hydrocarbons (resistivity)). The increasing importance of Machine Learning (Artificial Intelligence) will be highlighted.

A basic level of understanding of geology and geophysics is assumed.
