    Introduction to VISTA® 2D/3D Processing

This five-day basic training class will introduce the student to the VISTA® interface and the tools to QC and process 2D and 3D land seismic data using VISTA®. It provides an overview of VISTA’s tools for project management, data import and manipulation, and flow construction to process 2D/3D seismic data.

    Day 1

The VISTA® Interface, Data Import and QC (using the 2D Straight Line Tutorial)

    • Create and manage projects, project settings and defaults
    • Importing 2D and 3D datasets in SEGY and other formats
    • VISTA dictionaries - creation and editing
    • Sorting
    • 2D straight Line geometry set up
    • Geometry QC (LMO velocity definition, first break picking and QC, FARR QC for shot and receivers, shot and receiver station coordinate prediction from first breaks)
    • Trace editing (trace amplitude statistics cross plots, polarity reversals, trace kills)
    • First break picking, QC and editing
    • Signal analysis (FK filter design, frequency analysis, S/N ratios, etc.)
    • Working with the Header Window (cross-plot displays, header math, header mapping and trace statistics)
    • Working with the Attribute Window (QC displays, plotting amplitude statistics on surface views)
    • Refraction statics, picking, editing and QC (elevation statics, refraction statics, refraction-based residual statics, true surface and floating datum concepts)

At the end of the session the student will be able to use the VISTA® software interactive features to QC and prepare 2D land surface seismic datasets.

    Day 2

Basic 2D Processing (using the 2D Straight Line Tutorial)

    • Creating, editing and running processing flows in VISTA®
    • Amplitude recovery, noise attenuation and deconvolution
    • Velocity analysis
    • CMP stack
    • Residual statics
    • Post-stack time migration

At the end of the day the student will be able to create job flows, apply and edit existing flows and create new flows to import, QC, and process 2D land seismic datasets.

    Day 3

Basic 3D Processing (Using the 3D Land Tutorial)

    • 3D Geometry Window
    • Attributes Window
    • Shot/Receiver QC in the Attribute Window (Automatic detection and correction of geometry errors based on first breaks)
    • 3D noise attenuation and deconvolution
    • Velocity analysis
    • CMP stack
    • 3D Interactive Seismic Cube Display
    • Residual statics
    • 3D post-stack time migration

At the end of the day the student will be able apply and edit existing flows and create new flows to import, QC, and process 3D land seismic data. Additionally the student will be able to use the Attribute Window, the 3D Geometry Window and the 3D Seismic Cube Window.

    Day 4

Crooked Line 2D Processing (Using the 2D Crooked Line Tutorial)

    • Surface consistent deconvolution
    • Linear noise attenuation
    • Velocity analysis
    • CMP Stack
    • Post-stack signal enhancement
    • DMO
    • Post-stack time migration

At the end of the day the student will be able to prepare crooked line datasets for processing. Moreover the student will be able to use the software to attenuate different types of noise including spikes, linear, and random noise.

    Day 5

Pre-Stack Time/Depth Migration (Using the 2D Crooked Line Tutorial)

    • Trim statics
    • Imaging velocity analysis
    • 2D/3D pre-stack time migration
    • 2D model building
    • 2D pre-stack depth migration

At the end of the day the student will be able to use the VISTA® software to apply pre-stack time and depth migration workflows to seismic land datasets.

This class is suitable for geophysicists and geologists wanting to learn how to QC and process 2D and 3D land seismic surveys with the VISTA® software package.

    • QC and prepare 2D/3D seismic land data for processing
    • Compute and apply statics solutions
    • Pick velocities and use flow commands to create a brute stack
    • Build appropriate noise attenuation workflows
    • Migrate seismic data using different methods

No previous processing knowledge is required. The course covers a few simple geophysical concepts but focuses mainly on the use of the VISTA® processing package.
