    IOSH Managing Safely

    Course Objective
    • Ideal for supervisors, managers, and team leaders, IOSH Managing Safely helps those responsible for the health and safety of others to assess and control workplace risks.
    The following points shall be discussed in the course:
    • The IOSH Managing Safely®ï¸ course gives people in positions of responsibility an overview of how to identify, evaluate, and control workplace risks. It helps those responsible for the safety and welfare of other workers to assess and control workplace risks. This includes evaluating the safety systems already in place within your organization.
    Activities
    • Classroom with Theoretical and Practical Implementation
    Pass requirements:
    • Pass BOTH short answers written assessment including hazard spotting part

    Session 1: Introducing managing safely
    • Reasons to manage H&S – Moral, legal, financial
    • The direct and indirect costs of accidents
    • Workplace accidents and illness game/quiz
    • 2 Videos about the consequences of accidents on an employee and his family
    • Session 2: Assessing risks
    • Important definitions – Hazard, risk, consequence, likelihood, accident, incident, near miss
    • Risk assessment matrix
    • Case study and group discussion
    • Game – Hazard identification - 3 different scenarios
    Session 3: Controlling risks
    • Hierarchy of risk control
    • Limitations of each option
    • Balancing safety against other priorities
    • Game – Risk control options identification - 3 different scenarios
    Session 4: Understanding responsibilities
    • What does the law require you to do? As far as is reasonably practicable “ concept”
    • How does the law work? Civil and criminal
    • The key parts of H&S Management Systems – plan -do-check-act “ concept”

    Session 5: Understanding hazards ( covering 22 common hazards at workplaces)
    • Video about common hazards at the workplace
    • Group discussion 
    • Groups of hazards –mechanical, physical, chemical, biological, environmental, organizational
    Discussion following hazards with control measures options of each:
    • Aggression and violence, asbestos, bullying, chemical and harmful substances, computer workstations, confined spaces, drugs and alcohol, electricity, fire
    • Session 3  discussion following hazards with control measures options of each:
    • Exit and entry, safety signs, working at height, housekeeping, lighting, manual handling, noise, machinery, radiation, slips and trips, stress, temperature, transport, vibration
    Session 6: Investigating accidents
    • Video about accident investigation and causes of the accident
    • (direct, indirect- root causes)
    • Importance of accident investigation
    • The investigation process and investigation team
    • Investigation report
    Session 7: Measuring performance
    • What do we mean by measuring performance in H&S?
    • How does it help us?
    • Proactive and reactive indicators
    • H&S Audit – internal and external, importance and limitations of each

    • Session 1: Revision and mock exams
    • Session 2: Course assessment
    • Session 3: Introducing course risk assessment project templet with samples
    • Group discussion and exercise
    • End of course
    • All employees in the oil and Gas industry

    • Field Supervisors
    • Workers have to supervise and/or manage day-to-day employees and the procedures they do in the workplace
