    Petrel Quantitative Interpretation

    The new Petrel Quantitative Interpretation (QI) course is designed for any experienced geoscientists who wants to perform seismic quantitative interpretation using Petrel. The objective for the user is to get familiar with the new integrated QI modules released with Petrel 2014, located in the Advanced Geophysics perspective.

    The user will review the workflows, the theory and the procedures on how to conduct rock physics and fluid substitution studies , AVO studies, AVO seismic attribute generation and how to perform simultaneous and stochastic inversions

    Day 1

    Modules 1 & 2 (Part 1)

    • Rock physics
    • AVO modeling


    Despite good seismic quality and well control, the correct interpretation requires quantifying the connection between geology and seismic data. The Rock Physics module establishes this link by computing elastic parameters. In this session, the participants will be introduced to the global QI workflow, the basic rock physics concept, the methodologies for setting up and running rock physics studies and the results crossplots for analysis.

    The second part of this session will introduce on AVO modeling applies a variety of convolutional algorithms to compute AVA responses.

    Day 2

    Modules 2 (Part 1) & 3

    • AVO modeling
    • AVO reconnaissance

    AVO reconnaissance identifies and classifies AVO anomalies in an exploration context. In this session, the participants will learn about the functionalities and procedures related to AVO modeling workflow, studies and reconnaissance tool.
    Day 3Modules 4 & 5 (Part 1)

    • Simultaneous seismic inversion and the Inversion property builder
    • Stochastic seismic inversion


    During this session, the participants will first learn the basic theory regarding Simultaneous inversion and apply the key workflows required to invert the seismic data to acoustic and elastic properties.

    The Stochastic seismic inversion brings a solution to the resolution issue in reservoir modeling due to the seismic resolution. In the second part of this session, the participants will learn the differences between simultaneous and stochastic inversions. They will also set up and run a stochastic inversion, quality check the output, calculate properties and create a reservoir AVO model from stochastic inversion output.

    Day 4

    Modules 5 (Part 2) & 6

    • Stochastic seismic inversion
    • Lithology classification


    Lithology Analysis and prediction is a rock physics based lithology prediction workflow that integrates well logs, seismic inversion and geological modeling and interpretation. It provides an estimate of the most probable lithology and the uncertainty associated with the prediction. In this final session, the participants will learn how to run the set of processes performing lithology classification including:

          • creating classification log;
          • lithology analysis;
          • lithology prediction.
