    Process Safety Management for Senior Managers

    Course Description:

    • This course is designed to provide the necessary knowledge and tools to understand the 20 elements of Risk-Based Process Safety (RBPS) PSM and their implementation of them.
    • Provide participants with the insights to understand the importance of management commitment and leadership for effective process safety management.
    • Offer a clear insight into how to promote a positive safety culture throughout the organization through the effective engagement of the workforce.
    • Provide participants with tools for measuring the process safety performance and keep continuous improvement.
    • The course will include a combination of presentations, case studies, and interactive group discussions.
    Course Objective
    • By the end of the workshop, the participants will be able to:

    Understand reasons for Process Safety and analyze case studies of major accidents and how failure Process Safety elements may contribute to Major Accidents Hazards.

    o Understanding the aim of the 20 Elements of Risk-Based Process Safety (RBPS) PSM. Recognize what good and poor process safety culture looks like.

    o Know Process Safety Leadership – Roles, Responsibilities, and accountabilities.

    o Understand the importance of Process Safety Competency in the implementation of PSM elements.

    o Discuss how the involvement of the workforce and Stakeholders' outreach will contribute to improving Process Safety.

    o Understand different HIRA studies used in the identification and assessment of Process Safety hazards and risks and how these studies will support the Risk-Based Process Safety approach.

    o Explain the importance of inherently safer processes during plant design along with risk analysis and management.

    o Understand how to Manage Process Safety Risks. Discuss critical cultural enablers to process safety performance and the critical role of the senior managers to drive those enablers.

    o Understand the importance of learning from experience to contribute in minimizing Major Accident Hazard recurrence.

    Day 1

    • An overview of process safety and its strategies evolution;
    • Impact of Major Accidents on a business, people, and environment;
    • Business, Moral and Legal implications of Process Safety Management. 
    • Process safety business case 
    • The PSM roles and responsibilities of the Executive Managers.
    • An overview of risk-based process safety (20 elements); focusing on the following elements:
    • Process Safety Culture
    • Stakeholders Outreach
    • Hazards Identification & Risk Analysis (HIRA)
    • Contractor Management System
    • Workforce Involvement
    • Internal Audit
    • Management Review
    • Process Safety Competency
    • Incident Investigation & Root Cause Analysis
    • Analyze the case study "BP Texas Refinery Explosion" of major accidents from the perspective of leadership and cultural roots to the event;
    • Inherently safer processes during plant design;
    • Process Safety Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). 
    • Catastrophic Incidents Warning Signs Exercise (Using Online Google Forms).

    • All senior managers on Process Safety Management System (PSMS).


    • An overview of process safety and its strategies evolution;
    • Impact of Major Accidents on a business, people, and environment;
    • Business, Moral and Legal implications of Process Safety Management. 
    • Process safety business case 
    • The PSM roles and responsibilities of the Executive Managers.
