    Well Site Preparation and Drilling Safety

    Course Objectives: 

    • The Oil and Gas Industry contains a wide variety of Health and Safety Hazards which are based on the technical and physical properties of the area. It is important to identify the complexities of these operations and to be able to identify the significance of these hazards for workers and the worksite. This course identifies the potential hazards of well site preparation and drilling and allows workers to work safely in the rig site and to fully understand the complications of rig site operations according to their competencies and job responsibilities. 
    Course Aims:

    • The structure and substructure of the rig 
    • Components of the rig to ensure the safety of the workers on the rig site 
    • Description of drilling components 
    • Drilling components and their safety methods

    Course Introduction, Site Hazards, and Rigging up Hazards 

    • Introduction to oil and gas operations 
    • Discussion of health, safety, and technical hazards during oil and gas operations 
    • Integration of Site Preparation Safety for the leveling site, excavations, and trenches
    • Integration of Site Preparation Safety for conductor hole and pipe, rathole, and mousehole 
    • Site Preparation of Transportation Equipment 
    • Discussion of health, safety, and technical hazards for integration of site preparation safety. 
    • Control measures for site preparation safety
    • Discussion of the Rigging Up process and how to set up the substructure 
    • Discussion of the Rig Floor and Mast or Derrick 
    • Potential hazards and control measures of setting up the substructure, rig floor, mast, or derrick.

    Rigging Up Safety and Rig Inspection

    • Installing Handrails, Guardrails, Stairs, Walkways, and Ladders
    • Potential hazards and control measures for installing the above components in the rig worksite
    • Hazards associated with preparing the circulating system of mud pumps, mud lines, and mud tanks.
    • Hazards associated with installing auxiliary equipment, such as the catwalk and pipe racks.
    • Control measures for installing auxiliary equipment
    • Discussion and overview of the rig inspection process
    • Roles and responsibilities of staff during the rig inspection process
    • Discussion of the significance of the control measures found after rig inspection
    • Discussion of the findings of the rig inspection procedure and how the results are applied

    • Discussion of the Drilling Process 
    • Discussion of the Drilling Components and a description of the functionality of each part 
    • Discussion of the roles and responsibilities of personnel during the drilling process and how to maintain the safety of workers during drilling
    • Process of how tubulars are handled and the roles and responsibilities of staff in this step 
    • Potential hazards and control measures of handling tubulars 
    • Define Drilling Fluid and its purpose for the wellbore
    • Discussion of preparing drilling fluid and the different types of drilling fluids (Water-based Muds, Oil-Based Muds, Synthetic Materials, and Air and form Fluids).
    • Potential hazards of drilling fluid and the control measures
    • Hazards and control measures for starting the drilling process 
    • Description and discussion of preparing to Breakout Pipe 
    • Roles and responsibilities of staff during the Breakout Pipe
